Charles Murphy on his bicycle cycling against a train

Back on a breezy day in June 1899, Charles Murphy, also known as “Mile-a-Minute Murphy,” set out to do something wild.

He was going to race against a Long Island Railroad train over a mile-long stretch to see if he could finish in under a minute, The New York Times reported on its cover at the time.

This wasn’t just for fun; it was a serious challenge and a significant moment in transportation history.

It happened during a time when cars were just starting to become a thing, and it captured everyone’s attention across the nation.

The Gilded Age and the Bicycle Craze

The late 1800s were an exciting time for getting around. Railroads and steamships made traveling long distances a lot faster, connecting the whole country and even different parts of the world.

Meanwhile, bicycles, once just a novelty, became a popular way to get around thanks to the “safety bicycle” invented in the 1880s.

This new type of bike was easier and safer to ride than earlier versions, and it quickly became all the rage in America and Europe.

Charles Murphy, born in Brooklyn in 1870, was a competitive cyclist with a knack for dramatics and pushing limits.

He had already set several cycling records and competed in intense six-day races. Racing against a train was his way of sealing his place in cycling history.

Man Versus Machine

The race took place on a specially prepared part of the Long Island Railroad that was straight and flat, perfect for speeding along. The local people and lots of spectators came to watch this unbelievable spectacle.

Murphy’s bike was equipped with the latest tech, including a specially designed frame and gears. They even laid wooden planks between the train tracks to give him a smooth path to ride on.

When the train whistled to start, Murphy took off, pedaling as hard as he could. The race was tight, with Murphy keeping an eye on the train to judge his speed.

As they approached the finish line, it became clear that Murphy was just ahead. He pushed through and finished in 58 seconds, beating the train and leaving the crowd in awe.

Why It Mattered

Murphy’s win was more than just a personal victory. It showed the world what humans could achieve with determination and the right technology.

Newspapers everywhere celebrated his win as a human triumph over machines.

The race led to more improvements in bicycles, like better tires and gears. It also made people think differently about what was possible with technology, portraying the bicycle as a tool for personal freedom and change.

A New Era For Bicycles

Murphy’s bike was at the cutting edge, with a strong frame and gears that let him pedal fast without losing speed.

In contrast, the train, though powerful, couldn’t speed up quickly because of its heavy weight and the time it took to get the steam pressure up.

This race showed how bicycles could be quicker to start and more nimble than trains.

Murphy’s Lasting Impact

Murphy’s race wasn’t just a cool story; it was a symbol of progress and new possibilities, showing that human skill could outdo the giant machines of the industrial age.

It shifted how people saw transportation, making the bicycle a symbol of personal power and a force for change in society.

His story still inspires us today, reminding us that with enough drive and innovation, we can go beyond what seems possible.

Ultimately, “Mile-a-Minute Murphy’s” race against the train is a standout moment in the history of transportation and human effort. It’s a classic example of the human spirit’s ability to take on challenges and redefine what we think is achievable, encouraging everyone to dream big and aim high.

Few countries rival France when it comes to cycling. With a long-standing history of producing some of the world’s best bicycles, from Tour de France racers to casual cruisers, there’s a French bike brand for almost every type of cyclist.

With so many different options to choose from, it can be overwhelming to decide on the perfect bike. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of the top 30 French bike manufacturers.

In this article, we’ll first look at some general trends and statistics in French bike manufacturing. Then, we’ll not only outline our top 30, as well as our list of French e-bike manufacturers, but we’ll also give our shortlist of the top 5 from across the whole country. So without further ado, let’s jump into it.

Are Many Bikes Made in France?

While the nature of the French bike industry is changing, there continues to be a significant number of bikes made in France. In 2022, according to Eurostat, the country manufactured around 450,000 bicycles, making them the 10th largest producer in the European Union.

Whilst cycling in France has always had not just its romantic -and practical- appeal, it’s become increasingly popular again over the last few years. Though the cultural significance of cycling, as well as the apparency of its environmental benefits, are both causes of this, so is the rich heritage of quality and innovation when it comes to French bicycle manufacturing.

However, while their heritage is principally in road bikes, their future is in electric bikes, where both domestic and imported brands enjoy an explosion in popularity nationwide. In fact, in 2022 alone, nearly 740,000 e-bikes were sold in France

Best French Bike Brands (Top 5)

moustasche bike brand

1. Moustache

With e-bikes set to dominate the French bicycle market, some great domestic contenders are looking to take advantage of the boom.

From their modest-sized factory in Bosges, Moustache Bikes is a 100% electric brand who are a leading provider of e-bikes in France. Offering a range of electric bikes, from kids to cargo, they’ve got an e-bike for everyone.

Utilising Bosch Technology, some of the most reliable and performance-oriented in the industry, they produce electric bikes which are extremely functional, effective, and durable.

Their current range of 69 bikes is carefully and beautifully designed to offer real alternatives to automobiles in France. If their success story continues, there’s little doubt that they will become the favoured choice nationwide with their bikes which aren’t just good for the present, but also for the future.

la pierre bike brand

2. Lapierre

With a history spanning 75 years, Lapierre is no newcomer to the French bike industry. Bringing together a wealth of experience and expertise in manufacturing, this long-standing brand has continued to excel.

Specialising in both electric and non-electric road, MTB, and gravel bikes, they continue to impress with their innovative design and exceptional customer service.

Whilst they operate in several categories, they are truly renowned for their mountain bikes, considered by many to be some of the best in the world. Rigorously tested by professionals, and still assembled in France to this day, they’re a favourite for those who value attention to detail, performance, and quality.

look cycles bike brand

3. Look Cycle

Another brand with a rich history of cycling excellence is LOOK.

At the performance end of road cycling, few other brands can celebrate such innovation as LOOK. In the 1980s, taking design elements from their skiing heritage, their celebrated and revolutionary automatic pedal helped Hinault on to victory in the Tour de France.

Since then, their aims have not diffused largely, and they continue to specialise in top-of-the-line electric pedals, as well as carbon frames.

Recommended by professionals and coveted by enthusiasts, their products have become legendary in the French performance cycling scene and remain so to this day.

peugeot cycles logo

4. Peugeot

If there’s a cycling brand that needs little to no introduction, it’s Peugeot.

With roots in the late 19th century, Armand Peugeot began manufacturing bikes, and by the early 20th century Peugeot had become one of the most successful bike manufacturers in the country.

It soon became a major contender in the racing world, sponsoring several professional cyclists, like Paul Bourillon, and since its founding the cycling division now celebrates 10 Tour de France victories, a feat only topped by Pinarello.

These days, the legendary French brand has diversified into almost all categories of cycling, but has established itself particularly in the field of e-bikes, where it continues to be a main contender.

voltaire bikes

5. Voltaire

Voltaire develops electric bikes that cater to different needs and preferences, from daily commuters to adventurous riders.

Born in 2018, this young brand is redefining the French cycling experience by creating elegant and sleek bikes with a contemporary electrical system, making them not only stylish, but practical too.

Their city models have made them exceedingly popular across the country, and are a great solution to the ever-growing traffic problems of the French city centres.

One of their most popular models, the step-through ‘Bellecour‘ is a great illustration of this. Inspired by the iconic mechanical French bicycles of the 1960s, the design retains its vintage charm while incorporating (and concealing!) some excellent electrical components, such as a premium Samsung battery.

French E-Bike Brands

E-bikes around the world are growing in popularity, and France is certainly no exception to the rule, boasting a market that’s showing significant growth and potential.

According to forecasts, the value of the e-bike market in France is expected to rise from $1.32 billion to almost $2.3 billion between 2021 and 2027.

Already, their significance is showing, and of the cumulative sales of nearly $3.6 billion achieved in the bicycle market in France in 2022, e-bikes made up around half of the French bicycle market share value.

Whilst there are plenty of new e-bike brands emerging in France, there’s also been a clear diversification from the long-standing heritage brands that are introducing electrical bikes to remain competitive and relevant.

Michael Mol in the Karoo during the Munga

South African doctor and beloved TV personality Michael Mol is gearing up to take on an extraordinary challenge, all in the spirit of giving back.

The 51-year-old is diving headfirst into a five-day endurance test known as the Munga with a mission to raise R55,000 ($3000) for education in collaboration with Nika Capital.

Mol will take on the grueling single-stage, non-stop mountain bike race, which cuts through the rugged terrain of the Karoo, a semi-desert natural region of South Africa. Spanning a jaw-dropping 620 miles (1000km), the Munga occurs annually during summer in the Southern Hemisphere, when temperatures soar well beyond 115°F (46°C).

It’s not by chance that this race has been dubbed the “toughest race on Earth.”

Riding the Munga for a Second Time

The race is a true test of grit. In a semi-supported format, participants like Mol receive aid from race officials and at designated villages but must navigate the challenging route without additional support.

Speaking to Discerning Cyclist, Mol shared his anticipation for the upcoming race, set to kick off on 29 November and wrap up on 4 December. Describing the event as “very special” to him, he reflected on his memorable experience in last year’s race.

“I took on the Munga with an incredible 18-year-old rider who is a type one diabetic. She was determined to prove that those with type-one diabetes can conquer anything. Her parents agreed, with one condition: she needed a doctor by her side. When asked to be that doctor, I didn’t hesitate,” Mol recounts. “It was my first Munga, and we crossed that finish line. It was such a rewarding experience.”

Cycling for a Good Cause

This time around, the former Top Billing TV presenter is on a mission beyond the race – he’s raising funds to enhance access to quality education where it’s needed most.

Nika Capital is doing phenomenal work in education, primarily in Pretoria and Soshanguve. The idea is that proper quality education means proper qualifications, work opportunities, and, ultimately, a proper job. The bigger picture here is to break the cycle of poverty,” Mol elaborates.

He emphasizes, “The aim is to guide kids out of that cycle, helping them enter the job market with meaningful qualifications. A school matric education that holds value, enabling them to surpass limitations. It’s not just about education; it’s an end-to-end solution.”

Michael Mol Puts Himself to the Test

It’s also the opportune moment for this father-of-three to demonstrate he’s still got the stamina.

“Maybe at our age, you still want to ask, ‘Have I got what it takes? Is there still adventure in me? Is it still challenging me?’ I don’t want to get lazy and comfortable and safe. There’s a lovely Paulo Coelho quote, ‘If you think adventure is dangerous, try routine.’ That’s something that sits close to my heart.”

Mol paints a vivid picture of the Munga’s demanding nature, where 180 to 200 riders embark on the journey, but roughly half don’t cross the finish line.

“There’s a huge attrition rate, and many riders fall by the wayside. Ironically, it’s not the time limit eliminating riders. It’s mainly because riders blow themselves up. It happens if you go too fast, eat too much, or don’t sleep enough. You have to pace yourself. It’s an interesting race with interesting dynamics.

“You spend a lot of time by yourself. Even if you are riding with other riders. There are times when you can’t see anybody around you. Times when you cycle, and the sun is setting, and it’s getting dark, and you’re in this big, open, lonely space, and you can feel the silence.”

But even the silence can become deafening. “I can only be quiet for so long. So, last year, I had an audiobook I was listening to during the race. I listened to Endurance, the Shackleton story. Let me tell you, when you’re suffering on a bike, in 50 or 48-degree heat, and you’re like, ‘This is so hard’, and you’re listening to Ernest Shackleton, who never gives up and keeps going, that puts things in perspective. It was a very good book to listen to while taking on the Munga.”

Riding a Santa Cruz Blur Through the Karoo

Mol is riding a 29” Santa Cruz Blur cross-country bike with dual suspension in a sea foam green. He adds, “I’m using AXS, which is so nice on the Munga. After that many days of gear shifts up and down all the time, it actually gets difficult to change gears.

“I’ve got pannier bags on the bike. I’m taking less than the average Joe, I think. A bag of emergencies below my frame. A top tube bag for my electronics and a drawstring bag that hangs off my handlebar, which I use most to keep essentials like my lip balm and food. All the stuff you need on hand.”

If you want to support Mol in his goal to raise funds for education in South Africa, you can contribute to his campaign here.

What to Consider When Buying a Bike Lock

When purchasing a bike lock, several key factors should be considered to ensure you make a wise investment in security and peace of mind. Here’s a comprehensive guide on what to consider when buying a bike lock:

Bike Lock Security Level

Look for locks with a high-security rating. Independent organizations like Sold Secure or ART provide the most common rating system. Higher-rated locks typically offer better protection against theft.

Types of Bike Locks

  • U-Locks: These are known for their strength and durability, providing a solid deterrent against theft.
  • Cable Locks: Lightweight and flexible, these are great for securing accessories or as a secondary lock.
  • Chain Locks: Offers flexibility and can secure your bike to a variety of objects, but the weight may be a consideration.

Bike Lock Material and Build Quality

Opt for locks made from hardened steel, as they are more resistant to cutting, sawing, or leverage attacks. The build quality should be robust to withstand tampering.

Bike Lock Size and Weight

Ensure that the lock is of an appropriate size to secure both the frame and wheel(s) of your bike. While heavier locks can provide better security, consider the trade-off with portability.

Locking Mechanism

Choose locks with reliable locking mechanisms, such as disc detainer or pin tumbler, which are resistant to picking. Avoid locks with a history of vulnerabilities.

Key or Combination Bicycle Locks

Decide whether you prefer a traditional key lock or the convenience of a combination lock. Keyed locks may offer higher security, while combinations eliminate the risk of losing keys.

Additional Security Features

Some locks come with extra features like double locking mechanisms, anti-drilling protection, or rubberized coatings to prevent scratching. Assess these features based on your specific needs.

Brand Reputation

Stick to reputable brands with a history of producing reliable and secure bike locks. Read reviews and gather feedback from other cyclists to gauge the performance of a particular brand or model.

Ease of Use

Consider how easy it is to carry and use the lock on a daily basis. A lock that is convenient to transport and simple to operate will encourage regular usage.

Warranty and Customer Support

Check if the lock comes with a warranty, and research the customer support reputation of the manufacturer. A solid warranty can provide additional peace of mind.

Cycling in Europe's hottest city, Seville.

Are you looking for a warm city break to somewhere that encourages and promotes cycling? Look no further than Seville, one of the hottest cities in mainland Europe.

Seville (or Sevilla, known in Spanish) has implemented numerous cycling and active transportation initiatives to improve the city’s urban mobility.

With a population of over 685,000 in its center, Seville is one of Spain’s largest and most bike-friendly cities. Despite the relentless heat, it has become a model city for urban mobility and is continually celebrated for cycling and sustainable forms of transport.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at Seville’s biking statistics, infrastructure, safety measures, and initiatives and understand why this city is a role model for not just Spanish cities, but for European and even global ones too.

Seville: A Red-Hot City Encouraging Cycling

The city of Seville, located in the Andalusian region of southern Spain, has a long history of cycling. The city’s excellent climate and flat terrain make it an ideal location for cycling.

However, excellence is subjective when it comes to climate. While it can be said to have a Mediterranean climate characterized by hot summers and mild winters, the high temperatures in the summer can make cycling challenging. Generally speaking, during the middle of the day in the warmer months, cycling is discouraged in all forms.

In recent years, the city has realized active transportation’s social, economic, and environmental benefits and has worked towards building more bike-friendly infrastructure.

VIDEO: CYCLING IN SEVILLE.

While previously a city of very few cyclists, Seville has successfully built 50 miles of protected bike lanes in just two years, at the cost of 5,000 parking spaces and over €30 million. Cycling has grown 11x in just over four years. This is an astounding feat, especially considering the limitations regarding the climate.

With the founding of Contramano in 1987 came many public demonstrations demanding the implementation of bicycle infrastructure, and, after many years of pushing, the activism has proved to be successful. The reception has been incredible, and if the plans were only spurred by a small minority, they’re now loved almost universally. This planning has been testament to the claim that “if you build it, they will come“. And come they have.

bicycle usage in seville

Bicycle Usage in Seville (Statistics)

Here are some interesting stats regarding bicycle usage in Seville. There are limited statistics on the exact number of bikes in Seville, but these stats indicate the popularity of cycling in the city.

  • Approximately 1 in 10 trips are made by bike. – Medium
  • The Sevillian municipality aims to increase the number of cyclists in Seville taking a daily bike trip from 67,000 to 115,000. – UCI
  • There was a 452% increase in bicycle trips in three years. – Medium
  • Of the daily cycling trips, roughly 23% are taken using the public bicycle-sharing network. – UCI
  • There were a total of 1 million trips made by bicycle in Seville in 2017. – Medium

Cycling Infrastructure in Seville

Seville has made significant investments in cycling infrastructure in recent years. The local government continues to work diligently to create an environment where cycling is a natural and safe choice for citizens.

However, this wasn’t always the case. The calls for cycling infrastructure in the city started as early as 1987, but serious implementation didn’t happen until 2003 after a progressive coalition government came to power and set the wheels in motion.

  • Between 2006 and 2013, the bike lane network increased by nearly 90 miles. – PeopleForBikes
  • SEVici, the city’s main bike rental scheme, has over 2500 bicycles available at over 250 stations. – Andalucia
  • There are more than 5,000 bicycle parking spaces in the Andalucia capital. – BikeTourSeville

Building this network has demonstrated that if you do something, people respond. It also showed that it is not a big deal to take space from cars and use it to improve other mobility options.

Bike Lanes in Seville

Did you know that the bike lanes in Seville are some of the best in Spain and, reportedly, in the world?

The municipality builds bike lanes on main avenues and boulevards, and separate bike lanes have been created in the downtown area, including the city’s primary axis, Paseo de Colón.

The city boasts over 180 km of bike lanes as of 2020, outnumbered only domestically by Madrid and Barcelona, and these bike lanes are considered some of the most well-designed and safe in Spain.

The bike lanes in Seville aren’t just for residents but serve equally as well for the huge number of tourists. The scenic riverside routes are well-served, and the main tourist attractions are all interconnected by bicycle lanes.

Seville Spend on Cycling

Seville has undoubtedly spent a lot on cycling, but it’s proven extremely valuable. The investment has been hailed as an international success, and the city is now considered a role model in terms of cycling infrastructure.

  • More than €32 million has been spent on the bicycle network. – PeopleForBikes

This figure may seem a lot, but compared to an €800 million metro line that less people use, it’s really a bargain. Investing in cycling is not just good for people and the environment, but it makes financial sense as well.

cycling rules in seville

Cycling Rules in Seville

To ensure the safety of all citizens, Seville does have some specific safety rules when it comes to cycling. Failure to adhere to these can, and likely will, result in a fine.

  • Cyclists must wear a helmet outside urban areas, or, risk a fine.
  • Cyclists are not allowed to use mobile phones while riding.
  • You cannot cycle under the influence of alcohol.
  • You must have a bell on your bike.
  • You must use lights on your bike between sunset and sunrise.

Is Seville investing in Urban Mobility?

Seville has been proactive in investing in sustainable urban transportation initiatives. Since 2007, when the Sevici bike-sharing system was introduced, the city has continued to implement various bike-friendly initiatives as part of their urban mobility plans.

The city has also implemented low-emission zones and has extensively invested in public transit, making the city more comfortable and appealing for cyclists.

Aside from bicycles, Seville has also invested in other aspects of urban mobility. In 2016 Seville became the first city in Spain to introduce an electric car-sharing program, which sits well with the micro-mobility options such as the e-scooter and e-bikes that are also available.

The city’s commitment to reducing car dependency is setting a new standard for sustainability in urban areas, reestablishing itself in a similar vein to many ‘car-free’ cities.

is cycling in seville safe

Is Cycling in Seville Safe?

Cycling in Seville is safe, especially compared to cities like London or Paris. Seville continues to prioritize bike safety alongside its commitment to active transportation resources.

In 2020, the city government launched a program to improve bike and pedestrian safety. The initiative aims, amongst other things, to secure more traffic signs and install more crosswalks.

  • Cycling in the city is twice as safe as when cycling infrastructure was nonexistent. – Medium

The key to safety has been to maintain a separation between road users, and the number of bike lanes which are physically separated from both the road traffic and pedestrians have given people a feeling of security and comfort when it comes to cycling.

Cycling Accidents in Seville

As we already discussed, Seville is recognized as a particularly safe place to cycle. Considering how busy it is, and how many cyclists there are in Seville, it’s remarkable.

While there are limited statistics on the number of accidents in Seville, its safety is largely attributed to its extremely well-interconnected network (that isn’t just a succession of bike lanes). These limit the interactions between bikes, cars, and pedestrians, ultimately providing a safer environment for all road users.

Bicycle Theft in Seville

Seville is recognized as a safe city overall, but it’s essential to note that bike theft remains an issue. The city government continues to improve bike security, including installing more bike parking spaces and surveillance around public areas.

Having said that, bicycle theft is reportedly one of the city’s most common crimes. However, the rates appear to be low, especially when compared to the bigger cities such as Madrid or Barcelona.

Is Seville Bicycle-Friendly?

After considering all the factors, we can say with some certainty that Seville is definitely a bicycle friendly city.

Public opinion surveys show that the vast majority of Sevillanos are satisfied with the city’s bicycle infrastructure and initiatives, and the number of cyclists continues to increase year after year.

With a sprawling cycling network, dedicated cycling infrastructure, and a safety-focused approach, Seville has become one of the most bike-friendly cities in Spain.

Seville is a wonderful city to cycle in, both for residents, and for tourists, and whilst it isn’t car-free, it’s an extremely livable and comfortable city to cycle in.

A Seville Cycling Revolution?

Seville’s success should serve as an inspiration to other cities. The city continues to invest in sustainable transportation initiatives that benefit its citizens and set an example for other Spanish and European cities.

Seville’s cycling revolution is on fire, and as a community, it demonstrates that we can all make a difference by choosing to ride bicycles, even in hotter locations.

By investing in urban cycling infrastructure and building in accordance with community support, Seville has set a model for other European cities to follow. With cycling, there’s hope for a better, sustainable future, and Seville is a testament to that vision.

What is a Single-Speed Bike?

A single-speed bike is a bicycle has only one gear ratio, meaning you can’t change gear. They’re easy to maintain, lightweight and have a clean classic aesthetic.

Single-speeds, by their very nature, are the simplest of bicycles. They have few components, no gears to shift (or maintain!) and are usually pretty quiet thanks to their lack of moving parts.

Some single-speeds are also fixies, but many have the option to be both. Whilst a single-speed has a freewheel allowing you to coast, a fixed-gear bike doesn’t. The latter has some unique advantages, such as responsiveness and greater efficiency, but they can be difficult to use for beginners.

Still, it’s always a plus when you have the option to choose between the two. You’re effectively getting two bikes for the price of one!

Who Is a Single-Speed Bike For?

A single-speed bike can be a great choice for a number of riders, especially those who value simplicity and efficiency. From city dwellers to track racers, there’s a huge variety available to suit most needs.

Single-speed bikes are often a great option for the budget-conscious cyclists. Having less components than their geared counterparts usually translates to a reduced cost, so there’s great savings to be had.

They’re also great for those who want to maintain their own bikes. Single-speeds generally require minimal maintenance, so for those who don’t have the time or knowledge of bicycle upkeep they’re a great option, even for complete beginners!

Single-speeds, however, aren’t necessarily for everyone. When it comes to hilly terrain, their lack of gears means that climbing can be a serious workout.

They also aren’t usually great for long-distance riders, especially if there’s a variation in terrain. For touring and bikepacking, a geared bike might be a more versatile option.

Single-Speed Bicycles Pros + Cons

Pros

  • Simplicity: Single-speeds have a minimal design with few components, meaning that they encourage a DIY approach to maintenance.
  • Lightweight: Stripped-down design means that they’re usually considerably lighter than their multi-speed counterparts.
  • Affordable: Reduced componentry often translates to lower cost when it comes to bikes, so they’re great for those on a budget.
  • Personalisation: Single-speeds are notoriously easy to customise and personalise, from swapping out the handlebars or saddle to a brand new paint job.

Cons

  • Inefficiency on Hills: Climbing steep hills on a single-speed can be a serious physical challenge.
  • Lower Top Speed: The top speed of a single-speed depends largely on the gear ratio. At some point, your legs can only move so fast.
  • Less Versatile: They’re better suited for urban environments, where agility and maneuverability are critical.
  • Distance Struggles: Generally, single speeds aren’t good for longer distance. This rings especially true if there is a variation in terrain.
