At the turn of the 20th century, Copenhagen, Denmark’s capital, found itself at the heart of a cultural shift that would weave its way through the city’s cultural and architectural identity.

This shift didn’t come from the usual sports or entertainment celebrities but rather from Denmark’s own royal family.

Thanks to royal backing, cycling, once a modest means of getting around, was transformed into a symbol of elegance and accessibility.

Cycling Royal Influencers

The Danish royals started embracing bicycles back when the world was just stepping into modern times.

It was none other than figures like King Christian X and later Crown Prince Frederik IX who spotlighted cycling.

Opting for bicycles over their lavish carriages and cars, they rode right alongside their people.

This public display was unusual for the times as bicycles were generally seen as the transport of the common man.

This surprising nod from the royals around the early 1900s turned the bicycle from a simple tool into a refined leisure activity.

If cycling was good enough for the king, it was certainly good enough for the average citizen.

DID YOU KNOW?
Bicycle monarchy (or bicycling monarchy) is a British term for the more informal and modest personal styles of the royal families outside the UK. This term was influenced by royals like the late King Frederik and Queen Ingrid of Denmark, who took to their bicycles during WWII in solidarity with their subjects and as a show of defiance to the Nazi occupiers. – BBC

The Democratization of Cycling

The royals’ choice to ride bikes became a strong democratic symbol, showing that the pleasure of biking was universal, cutting across social classes.

This encouraged Copenhagen’s residents to take up cycling too.

Royal figures like Princess Thyra and Prince Knud, often seen enjoying a ride, helped cement cycling as a part of Danish life.

Firstly, it highlighted the bicycle as an affordable and practical choice for everyone, regardless of social standing.

Secondly, it encouraged the public to engage in a healthier, more active lifestyle, which was accessible to all.

Cycling in Copenhagen soon became not just a way to get around but a part of the city’s cultural identity.

A Lasting Impact

The royal enthusiasm for cycling sparked significant changes in city planning.

During King Christian X’s rule in the interwar period, there was a push to develop urban spaces that catered to cyclists.

This effort only grew under Frederik IX post-war, with Copenhagen ramping up its commitment to a bike-friendly infrastructure.

By the 1970s, with Queen Margrethe II at the helm, there was a resurgence in the city’s biking culture.

This period saw the development of extensive bike paths and the pedestrianization of major streets like Strøget, drawing the city closer to its cycling roots and further from car traffic.

Today, Copenhagen is often cited as one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the world. It boasts an extensive network of bike lanes, traffic laws favoring cyclists, and widespread bicycle parking facilities.

The city’s commitment to cycling is evident in its urban planning policies, which prioritize bicycles over cars in many areas.

This has not only helped reduce traffic congestion and pollution but has also fostered a more community-oriented and sustainable urban environment.

A Mix of Tradition and Forward-Thinking

Now, Copenhagen’s identity is deeply tied to its cycling culture, a tradition that is as royal as it is progressive.

The city streets, once trod by royal processions, now pulse with the rhythm of its vibrant biking scene.

The royal endorsement of bicycles in the early 20th century continues to influence the city’s transport policies today.

Copenhagen’s evolution into a cycling paradise underscores the role of the monarchy in molding its cultural and environmental landscape.

From King Christian X to Queen Margrethe II, the royals showed that progress often comes on the back of tradition.

This cycling legacy, fostered by the monarchs, stands as a powerful example of how a simple, sustainable activity can drive significant change.

Cycling in Copenhagen is more than just a mode of transport; it is a cultural emblem that stands for equality, health, and environmental consciousness.

Copenhagen’s transformation into a cycling city is a prime example of how influential figures can champion a simple, sustainable practice and effect significant cultural and environmental changes.

The Danish royals of the early 20th century not only changed the way their subjects moved but also set a precedent for future generations, proving that sometimes, the most enduring revolutions start with a simple pedal push.

For those interested in the detailed history of cycling in Copenhagen and its royal influence, resources like the Copenhagen City Museum or the Danish Royal Library offer extensive archives and exhibits on this transformative period in the city’s transportation history.

suffrage movememnt and the bicycle

In the late 19th century, a time marked by rigid social norms and restrictive expectations for women, a simple invention—the bicycle—became an unexpected symbol of freedom and change.

The women’s suffrage movement, which fought tirelessly for women’s rights to vote and have equal standing in society, found an unlikely ally in this new mode of transportation.

The bicycle not only challenged the status quo but also empowered women in ways that were both practical and profound.

Breaking Away from Victorian Restrictions

During Victorian times, women were expected to wear heavy, cumbersome dresses and corsets that limited physical activity and were a daily reminder of the restrictive roles women were supposed to play in society.

Enter the bicycle: a tool that required practical attire to ride. Women cyclists started wearing bloomers—a type of baggy pants that were considered scandalous at the time—because they were much more practical for riding.

This shift in fashion was not just about comfort but was a bold statement against the restrictive clothing that women were expected to wear.

By choosing bloomers over dresses, women cyclists were taking control over their own mobility and, symbolically, their own lives.

Susan B. Anthony and the Bicycle

Susan B. Anthony, a leading figure in the women’s suffrage movement, recognized the profound impact of the bicycle on women’s liberation.

She famously stated that the bicycle did “more to emancipate women than anything else in the world.”

This was because the bicycle made it possible for women to move freely and independently in a way that they had never been able to before.

With a bicycle, a woman could travel on her own to work, to social engagements, or just for pleasure, without relying on a man or public transportation.

This newfound mobility was a tangible form of freedom that contributed significantly to the growing sense of independence among women at the time.

The Bicycle as a Symbol of Equality

The bicycle‘s impact went beyond practical mobility. It became a symbol of equality and empowerment.

As more and more women took up cycling, it became a visible sign of changing attitudes towards women’s roles in society.

The bicycle suggested that women were not just capable of handling new technology but were also entitled to the same freedoms enjoyed by men, including the freedom to vote.

The sight of women riding bicycles became intertwined with the broader movement for women’s rights, illustrating how technology and social change are deeply connected.

Lasting Impact on Society

The relationship between women and bicycles during the suffrage movement highlights a key point: technology can be a powerful agent of social change.

The bicycle not only changed how women moved through the world but also how they saw themselves and their place in society.

It supported a shift towards more practical and equal considerations in clothing, which reflected broader desires for social equality.

The story of women, bicycles, and the suffrage movement is a compelling example of how even the simplest technologies can play a significant role in cultural shifts.

For women in the late 19th century, bicycles were more than just a way to get around; they were a path to freedom, a challenge to societal norms, and a ride towards equality.

Ghost cyclist

During the dark days of World War I, as soldiers faced the horrors of battle with constant mud, blood, and the roar of artillery, an eerie story began to spread.

It was about a mysterious figure known as the phantom cyclist.

Soldiers from both sides of the war said they saw this ghost-like rider moving silently through the devastated no-man’s land—the dangerous area between the opposing trenches.

Shrouded in mist and surrounded by the wreckage of war, the phantom cyclist was said to carry messages on his back, gliding through the wasteland where nobody else dared to go.

The true origin of this spooky tale is unclear, possibly dreamed up by exhausted soldiers looking for a glimmer of humanity amidst the nightmare of the front lines.

There are no official records of such a figure, which only adds to the mystery and speculation about the story.

Some historians think the phantom cyclist was a mix of the soldiers’ hopes, fears, and the intense atmosphere of the trenches.

DID YOU KNOW?
“John Parr, was the first British soldier to be killed in action at the start of what became known as the Great War. Private Parr was killed on 21st August 1914 while on patrol on the outskirts of Mons, Belgium. He was a reconnaissance cyclist in the 4th battalion of the Middlesex regiment.”
Forbes

More Than Just a Ghost Story

The story of the phantom cyclist is more than just another ghost tale—it represents the unbreakable human spirit and the strange ways people tried to communicate during the overwhelming chaos of war.

For soldiers in World War I, the bicycle wasn’t just a way to get around; it was a symbol of movement, innovation, and the fast-changing technology of warfare.

The image of a lone figure braving the dangers of no-man’s land on a bike showed a brief moment of courage and the hope of overcoming physical and emotional barriers.

Why the Story Matters

For the soldiers stuck in the trenches for long stretches, under extreme stress, supernatural stories like the phantom cyclist served several purposes.

They helped soldiers deal with the constant fear of death and the brutal conditions of war.

These stories also brought a touch of mystery and excitement to their daily lives, providing a temporary escape from the grim reality they lived in.

The tale also mirrors the cultural and historical backdrop of the early 20th century, a time when technology was rapidly advancing.

The bicycle, a significant innovation before the war, became a legendary figure in wartime stories, showing how deeply technology was embedded in society’s fabric and remained in people’s minds even during conflict.

The Legacy Continues

While it’s uncertain if the phantom cyclist ever really existed, the legend lives on as a moving reminder of the impact of war on people’s minds.

Stories like this offer insights not just into the conditions of the war but also into how people seek to find meaning and keep their morale up in extraordinary times.

The phantom cyclist stands as a symbol of the odd and eerie stories born from the chaos of war, a ghostly rider on the line between life and death, reality and myth.

This story, perhaps a creation of the soldiers’ collective imagination or folklore, highlights the complex relationship between human resilience, war, and the supernatural often found in historical accounts and literature.

Charles Murphy on his bicycle cycling against a train

Back on a breezy day in June 1899, Charles Murphy, also known as “Mile-a-Minute Murphy,” set out to do something wild.

He was going to race against a Long Island Railroad train over a mile-long stretch to see if he could finish in under a minute, The New York Times reported on its cover at the time.

This wasn’t just for fun; it was a serious challenge and a significant moment in transportation history.

It happened during a time when cars were just starting to become a thing, and it captured everyone’s attention across the nation.

The Gilded Age and the Bicycle Craze

The late 1800s were an exciting time for getting around. Railroads and steamships made traveling long distances a lot faster, connecting the whole country and even different parts of the world.

Meanwhile, bicycles, once just a novelty, became a popular way to get around thanks to the “safety bicycle” invented in the 1880s.

This new type of bike was easier and safer to ride than earlier versions, and it quickly became all the rage in America and Europe.

Charles Murphy, born in Brooklyn in 1870, was a competitive cyclist with a knack for dramatics and pushing limits.

He had already set several cycling records and competed in intense six-day races. Racing against a train was his way of sealing his place in cycling history.

Man Versus Machine

The race took place on a specially prepared part of the Long Island Railroad that was straight and flat, perfect for speeding along. The local people and lots of spectators came to watch this unbelievable spectacle.

Murphy’s bike was equipped with the latest tech, including a specially designed frame and gears. They even laid wooden planks between the train tracks to give him a smooth path to ride on.

When the train whistled to start, Murphy took off, pedaling as hard as he could. The race was tight, with Murphy keeping an eye on the train to judge his speed.

As they approached the finish line, it became clear that Murphy was just ahead. He pushed through and finished in 58 seconds, beating the train and leaving the crowd in awe.

Why It Mattered

Murphy’s win was more than just a personal victory. It showed the world what humans could achieve with determination and the right technology.

Newspapers everywhere celebrated his win as a human triumph over machines.

The race led to more improvements in bicycles, like better tires and gears. It also made people think differently about what was possible with technology, portraying the bicycle as a tool for personal freedom and change.

A New Era For Bicycles

Murphy’s bike was at the cutting edge, with a strong frame and gears that let him pedal fast without losing speed.

In contrast, the train, though powerful, couldn’t speed up quickly because of its heavy weight and the time it took to get the steam pressure up.

This race showed how bicycles could be quicker to start and more nimble than trains.

Murphy’s Lasting Impact

Murphy’s race wasn’t just a cool story; it was a symbol of progress and new possibilities, showing that human skill could outdo the giant machines of the industrial age.

It shifted how people saw transportation, making the bicycle a symbol of personal power and a force for change in society.

His story still inspires us today, reminding us that with enough drive and innovation, we can go beyond what seems possible.

Ultimately, “Mile-a-Minute Murphy’s” race against the train is a standout moment in the history of transportation and human effort. It’s a classic example of the human spirit’s ability to take on challenges and redefine what we think is achievable, encouraging everyone to dream big and aim high.

Angle-grinder man bicycle lock

Bike theft has always been a challenge for cyclists, but these days, thieves are more brazen than ever, even whipping out angle grinders to swiftly sever locks in plain sight.

Bicycle thefts are mostly unreported, making it difficult to identify an exact number. Still, it’s estimated that about four million bikes are stolen annually in Europe and over two million in the United States alone.

With the use of power tools to cut through locks, even in public spaces, being so common, we wanted to know whether angle grinder-proof locks exist and, if they do not, what cyclists can do to keep their bicycles secure.

Is There a Bike Lock That Can’t Be Cut with an Angle Grinder?

Well, there’s some bad news and good news. The bad news is that there aren’t any bike locks that are entirely angle grinder-proof, but with technology rapidly advancing, multiple locks offer steel-tough protection, and there are many ways to keep your trusty steed safe from the grubby hands of bicycle thieves.

The new generation of bicycle locks is made from hardened material and designed to be very difficult and time-consuming to cut with an angle grinder.

These locks can deter thieves, as they are less likely to target a bike that is well-locked with a resistant lock.

Materials capable of resisting angle grinders are often too heavy or cumbersome for everyday use, making the lock less practical for cyclists. Additionally, enhancing a lock’s resistance usually increases its cost, making it less accessible for the average bike owner. This delicate balance between security and practicality remains a central dilemma in the development of theft-resistant bike locks.

Lock your bike

What Are the Best Locks Against Angle Grinder-Wielding Thieves

Products like Litelok and Hiplok are at the forefront of this innovation, offering cyclists enhanced protection against angle grinders. These locks are not only tougher on the material front but also more innovative. They alert owners to tampering attempts and provide the location of a stolen bike, thus significantly increasing the chances of recovery and deterring theft.

Recommendations from experienced bike owners highlight the effectiveness of the Litelok X3 and Hiplok D1000. These locks have demonstrated resilience in the face of angle grinder attacks, requiring multiple blade changes and considerable effort to cut through, thus significantly delaying thieves.

Anecdotes from bike owners, such as one person in London whose expensive e-bike was saved multiple times by the Hiplok lock, attest to their effectiveness. While these locks are not foolproof, they are formidable barriers against theft, often discouraging thieves from attempting a heist.

According to Reddit user, valdemarjoergensen, thieves are unlikely to take on Litelok X3 and Hiplok D1000 locks when there are other options around. Thieves will “see they are wearing their blade down by cutting the lock and move on”.

He added, “They are resistant to the point where you’ll be hard-pressed to find something to lock the bike to that isn’t easier to cut than the lock itself.”

  • Our rating: 5 out of 5 stars

    Litelok X3

Resists angle grinder attack by turning the grinder’s energy and force in on itself.

  • Our rating: 5 out of 5 stars

    Hiplok D1000

Withstands angle-grinder attacks at least 20x longer than standard D locks.

Other Strategies to Beat Bike Thieves

Aside from investing in a resistant lock, there are several strategies bike owners can employ to deter thieves:

Use Multiple Locks: Combining different lock models can complicate the theft process, making it more time-consuming and difficult for thieves to execute a quick steal.

Locking Technique: Always lock your bike to a solid object as immovable and durable as the lock itself. Locking through both the frame and a wheel can leave the bike less maneuverable and more challenging to carry off if the lock is breached.

Visibility and Location: Parking your bike in a well-lit, highly visible area can deter thieves, who prefer to work in shadows where they’re less likely to be noticed.

Remove the Battery on E-bikes: Removing the battery on electric bikes when parked can make them less attractive and more difficult to steal.

Additional Security Features: Consider using a GPS tracker, which, while it may not prevent theft, can help recover a stolen bike. Innovative locks that release a stinky, colorful fluid upon being cut have also emerged as a novel deterrent.

Ultimately, the goal is to make your bike a less appealing target than others in the vicinity. By employing a combination of high-resistance locks and smart locking strategies, bike owners can significantly reduce the risk of their bikes being stolen by angle-grinder-wielding thieves.

However, it’s important to remember that no matter how many measures you put in place, nothing is entirely foolproof, and a layered approach to bike security is always the best strategy.

I believe that cycling can transform people and places.

That’s why, since 2012, I’ve been running Discerning Cyclist with the aim of helping existing cyclists ride in style and encouraging more people to get back in the saddle.

We do this by creating content.

We try to help you find a great bike and nice gear to ride in, provide useful tips and share inspiring stories.

The Discerning Cyclist team is small: myself (Pete 👋), Herman (our content manager) and a team of freelance writers, editors and assistants who are passionate about pedalling.

In order to devote ourselves to this project and keep growing it, we need to make some money (don’t we all).

Traditionally, we’ve done this through 3 means:

  1. display advertising (i.e. the advertising banners you see on the site);
  2. affiliate commissions (i.e. we sometimes get a small commission if someone buys products we recommend);
  3. partnerships with brands

The first one (display advertising) is our biggest source of income. It pays the bills.

ADS ON DISCERNING CYCLIST

But I HATE it.

It doesn’t improve your experience on the site. In fact, it ruins it. The content is disrupted, there’s an annoying pop-up you have to click. Urgh.

Unfortunately, I can’t just switch off the ads (as I’ll go bust within a month).

So… I’ve been putting my thinking cap on: How can we better monetize the site so that the user experience isn’t tarnished by messy ads but we can afford to keep going funding our mission?

I debated created a paid membership with additional content, finding website sponsors, but then I realised the answer was looking at me all along.

What if we could turn our lovely illustrations into how we fund Discerning Cyclist?

By selling illustrations as lovely printed artwork, as well as some other beautiful bike-related merch, we could continue to pedal our cycling celebration and make our site look even more beautiful in the process.

Just like this…

BUY DISCERNING CYCLIST PRINT HERE
BUY CELEBRATE CYCLING PRINT
BUY EINSTEIN CYCLING PRINT
BUY WHEELIE GRANNY PRINT

What’s more, YOU can also BECOME THE ART!

Wait… what?

So as well as selling prints of our most popular designs, we can even create a custom illustration of you with your bicycle.

Send us your favourite photo with your bike and our in-house illustrator will transform it into a beautiful illustration which will be sent to you within 7 days as a digital file, making it perfect to use as a profile picture online. Plus, we can also help you get it turned into a beautiful poster or print too, if you like.

Limited Edition Collection

AND… merch! Each month we’ll be dropping a limited collection of merch.

Our first collection is the Feel Good Cycling range, which features one of most popular designs transformed into a mug, thermal flask, phone case, tote bag, print and t-shirt.

The Feel Good Cycling range will ONLY be available in March 2024, though. It won’t be available to buy again.

At the start of 2024, a beautiful 4.5km bike lane was constructed through a pine forest that separates Chiclana de la Frontera and Conil de la Frontera in Andalucia, Spain.

This lane wasn’t just a pathway but a testament to nature-friendly infrastructure, designed to be as far removed from the hustle and bustle of motor traffic as possible.

IMAGE: RICARDO GONZALEZ

Financed as part of EuroVelo, the European-wide initiative aimed at fostering cycling tourism, this route marked a significant phase in EuroVelo 8, which ambitiously aims to connect Cadiz, Spain, to Athens, Greece, via a seamless 7,560km bike-friendly route.

THE FULL EUROVELO 8 ROUTE (IMAGE: EUROVELO)

For a brief moment, it seemed that Andalucía had embraced the future of cycling, offering both locals and tourists a safe, serene, and scenic route to enjoy.

The lane was a success, drawing more people to cycling and proving the positive impact well-thought-out infrastructure can have on a community.

Eurovelo 8
A nearby highlight of the eurovelo 8 route (IMAGE: PETE REYNOLDS)

However, the harmony was short-lived.

Weeks after its celebrated opening, the path underwent a transformation that was as perplexing as it was dangerous. Giant concrete bollards, over 30cm wide and almost a meter high, were installed at various points along the route — most problematically, on corners.

These obstructions not only consumed a significant portion of the already narrow 2-meter wide path but also introduced a hazardous obstacle for cyclists to navigate, particularly under wet conditions.

CONCRETE PILLARS ON WET CORNERS (IMAGE: PETE REYNOLDS)

The raised design of the path, approximately 80cm above the ground, was initially considered a questionable element, possibly intended to mitigate flood risks or protect against tree root damage.

Yet, the addition of the bollards compounded these concerns, making any potential fall from the path not just possible, but perilous.

NOT MUCH SPACE TO PASS (IMAGE: PETE REYNOLDS)

The rationale provided is supposedly to stop cars attempting to drive down the path – not that that seems likely given how narrow the path is and how steep the sides are.

STEEP BANKS AND CONCRETE BLOCKS (IMAGE: PETE REYNOLDS)

However, this solution seems to overlook the actual needs and safety of cyclists – who this path is designed for – suggesting a disconnect between the designers and the users of this infrastructure.

Instead of being considered for one of the best examples of cycling infrastructure in southern European, it’s now a legitimate contender for being one of the worst bike lanes around.

EuroVelo 8 bike path
Part of the affected bike lane (IMAGE: PETE REYNOLDS)

“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing”

Ricardo Gonzalez, a local cyclist and frequent user of the path, shared his views on the changes. Initially enthusiastic about the route’s construction and its contribution to a more cohesive cycling network along the Cadiz coastline, Ricardo’s excitement turned to disbelief upon seeing the bollards.

“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” he recounted, expecting maybe one bollard at an intersection, not the multitude that appeared, especially on curves, which he likened to a “bad joke.”

NARROW PASSING (IMAGE: PETE REYNOLDS)

The installation of these bollards has not only deterred cyclists but has also made the path more dangerous and less accessible, particularly for those on cargo bikes or those navigating the path under less than ideal weather conditions.

Ricardo’s observations highlight a significant increase in cyclists since the path’s opening, underscoring the potential impact of such infrastructure on promoting cycling.

Yet, the question remains: why were these bollards added, and what alternatives could have been considered?

For Ricardo, good design speaks for itself. If a route is properly designed in the first place, it shouldn’t need multiple warning signs or monster concrete bollards. Of course, it would have also been better if the route had been created without such steep banks and curves too – but that is not an easy fix.

For now, simply removing the dangerous bollards will go a long way to improving the path’s safety and accessibility.

A clear stretch of path (IMAGE: PETE REYNOLDS)

Stop Wasting Money

The story of this bike lane serves as a cautionary tale for future cycling infrastructure projects, not just in Andalucía but globally.

It underscores the importance of engaging with the cycling community and local users in the planning and implementation phases to ensure that new developments meet their needs and enhance safety without introducing new hazards.

As cycling continues to gain traction as a sustainable mode of transportation and a cornerstone of eco-tourism, the lessons learned from this project can inform more thoughtful, user-centered approaches to infrastructure development.

EUROVELO 8: CONIL TO CHICLANA (IMAGE: PETE REYNOLDS)

By fostering a dialogue between designers, local authorities, and cyclists, communities can create not only beautiful but also safe and functional cycling routes that serve the needs of all users.

Ultimately, this route has many of the features needed to make a perfect bike lane, but two simple and costly mistakes (i.e. concrete obstacles and steep verges) have ruined this opportunity.

The bike lane between Chiclana de la Frontera and Conil de la Frontera remains a symbol of both the potential and the pitfalls of cycling infrastructure development. cyclist going down road

Have you ever wondered why people actually ride a bicycle?

No?

Oh. Well, I have.

So I asked our audience on Facebook, why they choose to ride a bicycle and over 200 people responded. The responses were incredible. It was a real insight into how people navigate their own challenges and journeys through life.

I then analyzed the responses, grouped them into categories (e.g., health, money, etc.), and ranked them by the most popular. This is what we found:

1. “So I Can Eat More Cake”

Cycling for exercise and health stands out as a predominant reason many choose to ride, reflecting a universal recognition of its extensive benefits.

Riding a bicycle is not only a low-impact activity that can improve cardiovascular health, muscle strength, and flexibility, but it also serves as a significant calorie burner aiding in weight management.

According to the Harvard Medical School, a 155-pound person can burn approximately 298 calories in 30 minutes of casual cycling, showcasing its efficiency as a fitness activity (Harvard Health Publishing).

Individuals like Alexander Moore highlight personal motivations, echoing this sentiment, stating, “Health. I was diagnosed with several chronic illnesses several years ago for which exercise is an effective treatment.”

This encapsulates the dual appeal of cycling: its capability to support physical health and serve as a therapeutic activity, enhancing overall well-being. The blend of empirical health benefits with personal testimonials underlines the role of cycling as a cornerstone in maintaining an active, healthy lifestyle.

Cycling commute

2. “Faster Than Traffic, Cheaper Than Trains”

Choosing cycling as a primary mode of commute and transportation reflects a growing trend towards sustainability, efficiency, and convenience. The environmental benefits are significant; cycling produces zero emissions, directly contributing to cleaner air and reduced traffic congestion.

A study by the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy suggests that increasing cycling rates could save society $24 trillion globally by 2050 due to reduced CO2 emissions and lower energy consumption.

Moreover, urban dwellers find cycling a time-efficient option. In cities crammed with cars, bicycles often maneuver through traffic faster, making it an appealing choice for daily commutes.

Steve Waterworth articulates this perfectly: “It’s cheaper, often faster and definitely healthier.” This statement captures the essence of why many turn to bikes for transportation, highlighting not just the practicality and environmental impact but also the health advantages over sedentary car journeys.

Cycling for commuting and transportation isn’t just about getting from A to B; it’s a lifestyle choice that champions sustainability, health, and efficiency.

Cycling outdoors

3. “Exploring Nature’s Wonders on Two Wheels”

Embracing cycling to immerse oneself in nature and the outdoors is a testament to the desire for a deeper connection with the environment. This motivation goes beyond physical exercise, embodying a quest for tranquility, beauty, and a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Cycling allows for an intimate experience of landscapes, changing seasons, and the subtle details of the natural world that go unnoticed from behind the windshield of a car.

Karen Jackson’s remark, “it’s amazing seeing God’s landscape,” echoes a common sentiment among cyclists: the awe and reverence for the natural beauty encountered on rides. This connection to the outdoors is not only soul-enriching but also reinforces the importance of preserving our natural surroundings.

The ability to explore and appreciate the environment firsthand motivates cyclists to advocate for and engage in more eco-conscious living.

In essence, cycling for the love of nature and the outdoors is a holistic approach that nurtures the body, mind, and spirit, offering a unique blend of adventure, exploration, and environmental stewardship.

Cycling happy

4. “Pedaling Stress Away”

Cycling’s role in enhancing mental health and relieving stress is increasingly recognized as one of its most valuable benefits.

The rhythmic, aerobic nature of cycling promotes the release of endorphins, the body’s natural mood elevators, helping to reduce anxiety and depression.

This physical activity also aids sleep quality and stress management, making it a potent tool for mental well-being.

Greg Roemer’s statement, “Feels good… I have never gone on a bike ride and at the end wished I never went,” captures the essence of cycling’s mental health benefits. It highlights how the psychological rewards are undeniable regardless of the initial effort it might take to start.

Cycling, combined with physical exertion and being outdoors, creates a meditative effect, allowing for a mental reset.

In a world where mental health issues are on the rise, cycling offers a simple, accessible means to support mental health. Its ability to combine exercise with exposure to nature and a break from the digital world makes it a multifaceted therapy for the mind.

Cycling childhood joy

5. “Rediscovering Childhood Joy”

Cycling stands out not just for its health or practical benefits but significantly for the sheer fun and joy it brings to riders. This aspect of cycling transcends age, fitness level, and purpose, tapping into the universal thrill of movement and speed.

The sensation of gliding on two wheels offers a unique form of liberation and happiness reminiscent of childhood freedom.

Renato Piereck articulates this feeling well: “Cause it’s fun!! Also, I’m 49, getting older every day, and it’s the exercise I like the most.” His words underline how cycling revives a youthful spirit, a sentiment echoed by many who find cycling an escape into exhilaration and joy.

It’s not just about getting somewhere or staying fit; it’s about the journey and the moments of bliss in the ride.

Cycling for fun and joy reiterates the simple pleasures that enrich our lives. It’s a celebration of life’s journey, encouraging us to pause, savor the moment, and revel in the happiness of riding a bike.

Cycling friends

6. “Connecting With Others”

Cycling fosters a strong sense of community and social connection, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds with a shared passion.

Group rides, cycling clubs, and community events provide motivation and a sense of belonging and offer opportunities for social interaction and making new friends.

The communal aspect of cycling cultivates a supportive network, encouraging riders of all levels to engage, learn, and grow together.

Florenz Abarquez’s perspective, “Because part of happiness and friendship,” succinctly captures the essence of cycling’s social benefit. It’s not just about the physical act of riding but also about the relationships built and strengthened along the way.

This communal activity promotes inclusivity, teamwork, and camaraderie, making it a powerful medium for social bonding.

The social and community aspect of cycling enriches the experience, transforming it from a solitary activity into a shared journey. It highlights cycling’s role in building connections, fostering friendships, and creating a supportive and welcoming community.

Cycling adventure

7. “Every Ride an Adventure…”

Cycling as a means for adventure and exploration taps into the human desire for discovery and challenge. This aspect of riding encourages cyclists to venture into unknown territories, tackle new trails, or embark on long-distance journeys, offering a sense of accomplishment and the excitement of the unknown. The bicycle becomes a tool for exploration, allowing riders to access places that might be unreachable by other means of transport, uncover hidden gems, and experience the world from a unique vantage point.

Kent Morgan captures this sentiment, stating, “Started with exercise and to travel with less of an environmental impact, now it is also to be a part of nature. I enjoy experiencing the seasons.” His words highlight how cycling for adventure and exploration is deeply intertwined with a connection to the natural world, the changing seasons, and the environment.

Cycling for adventure and exploration embodies the spirit of curiosity and the pursuit of new experiences. It challenges riders physically and mentally, offering endless possibilities for personal growth and the joy of discovery. This dimension of cycling celebrates the journey itself, emphasizing that sometimes, the best adventures are found on the path less traveled.

Cycling environment

8. “Pedaling Towards a Greener Planet”

Choosing cycling for its environmental benefits reflects a growing consciousness about the impact of our transportation choices on the planet. Cycling is a zero-emission mode of transport, significantly reducing one’s carbon footprint compared to driving a car. This eco-friendly alternative helps combat climate change and reduces air pollution and noise in urban areas, making cities more livable and sustainable.

Steve Waterworth’s choice to cycle, “even though I have a car, it’s cheaper, often faster and definitely healthier,” touches on the personal benefits of cycling, which also align with broader environmental advantages. Cycling as a primary mode of transportation is a proactive step towards preserving our environment for future generations.

Cycling for environmental reasons is a testament to the power of individual actions in contributing to global sustainability efforts. It underscores the role of cycling as a means of transport and a commitment to a greener, healthier planet. This motivation aligns personal health and well-being with environmental stewardship, offering a holistic approach to living sustainably.

Saving money

9. “Saving Money, Riding Happy”

Cycling, as an economic choice, highlights its role in reducing personal and societal costs. Opting for a bicycle over a car can significantly cut down on expenses related to fuel, maintenance, parking, and even the costs associated with traffic congestion. For many, cycling is not just a budget-friendly alternative but a strategic decision to minimize living expenses and contribute to a more sustainable economy.

Ja Van illustrates the economic advantage: “It’s cheaper than a motorcycle and car, and faster than a skateboard. Any other vehicle is more expensive to take on the boat.” This comment emphasizes the cost-efficiency of cycling, especially in unique commuting scenarios where other modes of transport could incur higher costs.

Choosing cycling for its economic benefits reflects a pragmatic approach to personal finance and environmental responsibility. It offers a clear path to savings, both for the individual and the community, by promoting a mode of transport that demands less from our wallets and the environment. This perspective underlines the practicality of cycling as an accessible and financially viable option for daily transport needs.

cycling freedom

10. “Embracing Freedom”

Cycling as a symbol of freedom and independence resonates deeply with many riders. This perspective celebrates the bike as a means to self-reliance, autonomy, and liberation from the constraints of conventional transportation methods. Bicycles empower individuals to set their own pace, choose their routes, and explore without the need for fuel, schedules, or roads accessible by motor vehicles.

Carl Costas captures this sentiment, expressing, “Because I’m just a kid with his bike…” This simple yet profound statement touches on the essence of cycling’s appeal – the return to a carefree state where exploration and mobility are entirely under one’s control. Cycling reintroduces the joy and simplicity of moving through space, unencumbered by the complexities of adult life.

Choosing cycling for freedom and independence is not just about physical movement; it’s a philosophical choice that values simplicity, self-sufficiency, and the pleasure of being unbound. It reflects a desire to engage with the world directly, experience the environment with all senses, and embrace the journey as much as the destination. This aspect of cycling celebrates the spirit of adventure and the enduring human quest for autonomy and personal space.

Charging an e-bike

Buying an electric bike is a substantial investment, and naturally, you want to ensure that your new ride can go the distance—literally and figuratively.

Just like you’d care for a high-end smartphone or a quality car, your e-bike requires a bit of know-how to keep it running smoothly for years to come.

At the heart of your e-bike’s performance is its battery, and with the right care, you can maximize its lifespan and get the best bang for your buck.

It’s not just about keeping your e-bike’s wheels spinning; it’s about smart, savvy battery care that extends its life and, by extension, your joy rides.

Whether you’re a daily commuter or a weekend trail explorer, the longevity of your e-bike’s battery can make or break your experience.

So, let’s dive into some expert tips from the folks at Energise E-Bikes that will help you get the most out of your battery and, consequently, your electric bike. From charging dos and don’ts to smart storage solutions, we’ve got you covered with real-world advice that’s easy to follow and straightforward.

e-bike battery

1. Get to Know Your Battery’s Lifespan

Your e-bike’s battery isn’t immortal, but it can be the next best thing with a little TLC.

Manufacturers typically quote a lifespan of 800-1000 full charges, which sounds like a lot, but let’s put it into perspective.

The staff at Energise E-bikes are zipping around on e-bikes that are nearing a decade in age, all thanks to original batteries that received proper care.

Understanding battery lifespan is crucial. It’s not just about counting charges; it’s about how you manage those charges. Knowing the expected number of cycles gives you a benchmark, but your habits can stretch that number even further. So, keep that charger handy, but let’s make every charge count.

2. Treat Your Battery Like a Living Thing

Think of your battery as a pet; neither likes being full or empty for too long. It’s all about balance. Keeping your battery between 30 and 60% charged during off-season storage mimics the natural resting state it prefers.

Some manufacturers now suggest a 75% charge for longer stints. It’s like giving your battery a comfortable place to rest without overstuffing it or leaving it starved. Aim for that sweet spot to keep it in tip-top shape.

3. Charge Smart During Storage

Storing your e-bike isn’t just about finding space in the garage. When it’s time to park your e-bike for a while, say during a snowy season, battery care is key. Aim for a 30 to 60% charge, though some brands may nudge that up to 75%.

Why not full? Keeping a battery fully charged for months is like tensing a muscle indefinitely—it gets worn out. Similarly, a completely drained battery can lead to cell crystallization, which is a fancy way of saying ‘battery kaput.’ So, when you tuck your e-bike away, give the battery its own cozy spot with the right charge.

4. Monitor the Mercury: Temperature Matters

Batteries are a bit like Goldilocks; they don’t like it too hot or too cold. The sweet spot? Between -5 and 40 degrees Celsius. But always double-check your manual, as your e-bike might have its own specific comfort zone.

Cold is the usual culprit for battery blues. A chilly battery may refuse to charge fully, but warming it up indoors can often bring it back to life. If moving it isn’t an option, insulate it with a blanket. Just remember, when it’s time to charge, a moderate temperature is your battery’s best friend.

5. Know When to Charge and When to Rest

You might have heard that you should drain your battery before recharging. Forget that. It’s old-school advice that doesn’t apply to modern e-bikes with smart battery management systems. These systems keep the cells in check, so there’s no need to hit zero before recharging.

In fact, it’s better to recharge before your battery gets too low. The ideal time to plug in? When it drops to about 50%. This habit is easier on the cells and keeps your battery going strong.

6. Use It or Lose It

Your e-bike battery thrives on activity. Just like muscles that atrophy without exercise, batteries lose their vim and vigor if left unused. Regular riding ensures that the charge cycles through the battery, which is key for longevity.

But if life gets in the way and you can’t cycle as often, don’t sweat it. Many e-bike batteries have a sleep mode that kicks in during these idle periods, preserving their energy and health until you’re ready to ride again.

7. Sleep Mode and Its Benefits

Sleep mode isn’t just for your laptop; it’s a lifesaver for your e-bike battery, too. When your battery senses it’s been out of action for a spell—usually a couple of weeks—it powers down to conserve energy and protect its cells.

Waking it up is simple: plug it into the charger or give the power button a long press, depending on your model. Always check your e-bike’s manual for the specifics on how to re-energize your battery after its hibernation.

e-bike battery

8. Stick to the Official Charger

It might be tempting to use that generic charger you found online for a bargain, but here’s why you shouldn’t: safety. Fire England reports that most e-bike-related fires are due to charging mishaps. An unofficial charger might overload your battery, leading to overheating or even a fire.

High-quality batteries have a thermal cutout to prevent these issues, but why take the risk? Using the charger that came with your e-bike ensures it gets exactly what it needs, no more, no less. Stick with the official gear for peace of mind.

9. Avoid the Full Charge Storage Trap

Leaving your battery fully charged during long periods of storage is like keeping a sprinter in the blocks; it’s ready to go but going nowhere. This state can stress the battery’s cells, shortening its overall lifespan. It’s akin to shaking a fizzy drink and leaving it on the shelf—pressure builds up unnecessarily.

Manufacturers recommend discharging the battery slightly before stowing it away. Aim for that 30-60% sweet spot, or even 75% if advised, to keep the cells relaxed and ready for your next ride without any loss in longevity.

e-bike battery charger

10. Unplug After Charging: A Simple but Crucial Step

Once your battery hits 100%, it’s time to unplug. Continuous charging beyond a full charge doesn’t provide any benefits and can even lead to overcharging if your charger lacks an automatic cutoff. This can wear out your battery faster over time.

Most modern e-bike systems and chargers are smart enough to prevent damage, but it’s a good habit to disconnect once charging is complete. Plus, it saves energy. So, when the light turns green, or the indicator shows full, give your battery a break and unplug.

Charging an electric car

Imagine the future of getting around in big cities. Do you see streets filled with electric cars, maybe even some that drive themselves?

Right now, electric cars are getting a lot of attention. But there’s a twist. Experts think that in cities, electric bikes (e-bikes) might be the real stars, not cars.

Here are 6 reasons why e-bikes – and not electric cars – are the future of urban transport:

1. Inefficiency of Space

Parking

Cars, whether they are moving or not, need a lot of space. In cities, space is very limited. This makes cars an inefficient choice for city living – especially when you consider cars are parked at least 85% of the time.

In a busy city, finding a parking spot can be hard. Streets are full, and parking lots take up room that could be used for parks or houses. Studies have also found that parking spots may actually cause congestion. Traffic jams make getting around slow. Even with electric cars, these problems stay the same. That’s before we even have to consider trying to find a space with a suitable charger.

This isn’t a problem for e-bikes. They are a fraction of the size and can move through traffic more easily. You can park several e-bikes in the space one car would take. This makes e-bikes a smarter choice for getting around in cities. They help keep the streets less crowded and make better use of limited space.

2. Money, Money, Money

Charging

While people may raise an eyebrow when hearing electric bikes cost about $2,000 on average, wait until you tell them how much an electric car will cost them. And that’s just the upfront cost.

It costs way less than a dollar to charge up an electric bike, meaning you can travel around for less than 1 cent per mile. Charging an electric car to full, meanwhile, ranges from $10 up to about $50. It might work out cheaper than gas, but not by the margins you can save with an e-bike.

Oh, and then there’s car servicing, insurance, repairs, parking fees… it’s no competition.

3. Environmental Impact

electric car

E-bikes are much kinder to our planet than cars, even electric ones. When we look at how they affect the environment, e-bikes come out ahead in many ways.

First, making an e-bike uses fewer resources and causes less pollution than making a car. Cars are big and need a lot of materials like metal and plastic. E-bikes are smaller and simpler, so they don’t need as much stuff to make them. This means less harm to the environment right from the start.

Then, there’s the energy e-bikes use. They run on electricity, which can come from clean sources like the sun or wind. Since e-bikes are light and efficient, they don’t need a lot of power to go far. Electric cars also use clean energy but are heavier and need more power to move. This means they can have a bigger impact on the environment, even if it’s less than gas cars.

National Geographic reports, “E-bikes are a powerful tool on the road to sustainability. When it replaces trips made by a car, an individual e-bike can reduce CO2 emissions by 225 kilograms each year. That’s equivalent to the emissions produced by one passenger flying economy from Philadelphia to Chicago.”

4. The Cities They Are a-Changin’

bike paths

Cities are changing to support e-bikes better. This shift is good news for people who choose e-bikes as their way to get around. More bike lanes, parking spots for bikes, and programs to share bikes are popping up in cities all over the world.

Bike lanes are a big deal. They give e-bike riders a safe place to ride, away from cars and trucks. This makes riding an e-bike in the city safer and more enjoyable. Many cities are adding new bike lanes and making the ones they have better.

Parking for e-bikes is also improving. Cities are adding spots where you can lock up your e-bike safely. This means you don’t have to worry as much about someone stealing your bike when you’re not using it.

Bike-sharing programs are growing, too. These programs let people use an e-bike for a short time, like for a quick trip across town. You pick up a bike from a station, ride it to where you’re going, and leave it at another station. This is a great way to try out an e-bike and see how it fits into your life.

5. Health and Social Benefits

charging an e-bike

One ironically lazy argument leveled about e-bikes is that they’re “lazy”. Ironically, this normally comes from people who spend most of their time sitting in a metal box called a car.

While e-bikes burn fewer calories than traditional bicycles per mile, studies have found that people with electric bikes cover, on average, 4x more distance than people with normal bicycles.

So, although you’ll exert less per journey, the long-term health impacts of riding your bike more often are huge, especially when it comes to managing weight, reducing the risk of heart disease and diabetes, and perks for your mental health.

E-bikes offer significant health and social benefits, making them an excellent choice for urban transportation. Riding an e-bike is not only a way to get from point A to point B; it’s also an effective form of exercise that can improve your physical health and well-being.

6. Accessibility and Ease of Use

different typs

E-bikes stand out in urban transportation for their accessibility and ease of use, making them an appealing choice for a wide range of people.

Unlike traditional bikes, e-bikes come with an electric motor that assists the rider, making it easier to cover longer distances, climb hills, and arrive at destinations without excessive fatigue.

This feature opens up cycling to those who might have found it too challenging before, such as older adults or individuals with physical limitations.

The design of e-bikes also plays a significant role in their accessibility. Many models offer step-through frames, adjustable settings, and comfortable seating, which cater to users of all ages and abilities. The intuitive controls and display systems on e-bikes allow riders to easily manage their speed and battery level, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable ride.

This all means that more people than ever can get in the saddle than ever, improve the liveability of our cities, feel better while they do so and even save a tonne of money at the same time!
