Electric bikes have enjoyed a major breakthrough over the past couple of years, with around 40 million e-bikes sold around the world in 2023.

We’ve been testing out e-bikes in all shapes and sizes, but recently we got to grips with our first electric mountain bike, the Lankeleisi RV800 Plus.

Below, we’ll run through our experience with this eye-catching bike.

Lankeleisi RV800 Plus Review
  • Range
  • Terrain

4.1

Summary

The Lankeleisi RV800 Plus, an electric mountain bike, stands out with its sleek, sturdy design and a powerful Bafang 750W motor, peaking at 1130W.  Its 48V20ah Samsung lithium battery offers decent range of up to 120km (if using minimal assistance). It features a lightweight aluminum frame, Kenda fat tires for smooth rides, a smart LCD meter, and hydraulic disc brakes. Ideal for off-road and urban use, it includes removable mudguards, weighing 35.5kg, combining functionality, aesthetics, and versatility for an enhanced riding experience.

Pros

  • Powerful motor
  • Great design. Looks awesome.
  • Capable on all terrains.

Cons

  • No rear light as standard
  • Quite heavy (35.5kg)

Lankeleisi RV800 Electric Mountain Bike

While Discerning Cyclist has tried out many fat electric bikes before, this was our first go on a dedicated mountain e-bike and the first thing you’ll notice about the RV800 is that it is a thing of real beauty.

It is an inevitably chunky e-bike, but it’s been designed in a way that still looks sleek and streamlined, with the battery built into the bottom frame. It also comes in some bright colours and I couldn’t resist the Discerning Cyclist-esque orange.

Packed with Power

At the core of the RV800 Plus is the Bafang 750W (Peak 1130W) motor, potentially delivering impressive acceleration and a top speed of 52 km/h, although this is limited to 25km/h in EU countries and 25mph in the US.

This power is perfectly suited for challenging terrains, ensuring that steep hills and rugged paths are conquered with ease. The star gear design in the motor amplifies torque and enhances energy efficiency, making every ride exhilarating yet efficient.

Battery Life

Equipped with a 48V20ah Samsung lithium battery, the RV800 Plus promises an exceptional range. In pure electric mode, Lankeleise claims to offer 60-70 kilometers, while the assisted mode extends this to a staggering 120-150 kilometers.

But if you’re flying around with full power, you can expect to get about 60% of this range – about 35 to 40km.

Rugged Yet Refined

The RV800 Plus doesn’t just perform well; it looks good doing it. The frame is crafted from lightweight aluminum alloy, offering both strength and agility.

Its large, double shoulder oil spring suspension fork, coupled with 26*4.0 Kenda fat tires, ensures a smooth ride across varied terrains, from city streets to muddy trails.

The bike’s design balances rugged functionality with sleek aesthetics, making it a head-turner wherever it goes.

User-Friendly Features

A standout feature is the color smart LCD meter, which offers a wealth of information at a glance, from gear settings to power output. This IP64 waterproof and dustproof meter enhances the RV800 Plus’s user experience, keeping riders informed and in control.

The bike also boasts hydraulic disc brakes for reliable stopping power, a Shimano 7-speed gear system for smooth transitions, and a comfortable sports seat, making long rides more enjoyable.

The RV800 also has a nice chunky and bright front light which can be controlled from the user dashboard, although sadly no rear light is included.

Not Just for the Trails

While the RV800 Plus excels in off-road conditions, its versatility makes it an excellent choice for daily commutes or leisurely weekend rides. The bike’s robust construction and powerful motor make it capable of handling urban environments with the same ease as mountain trails.

Whether you’re navigating city streets or exploring backcountry roads, the RV800 Plus adapts seamlessly to your needs. Lankeleisi also provide removable mudguards with the bike which is a most welcome addition and one that should come with every bike in my opinion.

Lankeleisi RV800 Plus Review

The Lankeleisi RV800 Plus is a great deal of fun.

Its combination of power, range, and design makes it a compelling choice for anyone looking to upgrade their riding experience. While it might be on the heavier side, weighing in at 35.5kg, the trade-off is a bike that’s built to last and perform.

If you’re in the market for an e-bike that can handle both urban commutes and rugged trails with equal aplomb, the RV800 Plus is certainly worth considering. It’s a bike that promises to transform your daily rides into extraordinary journeys.

Oh, and it looks really cool.

All-terrain Bike (ATB)

With a wide variety of bike types available, it’s no wonder that finding the perfect one can be a bit overwhelming.

Every time you look, there’s a new type of bike to fit some niche. There’s no shortage of categories, from cyclocross to track, cargo to hybrid. But sometimes, some distinctions are not as clear as others. One question that often arises is: what is the difference between an all-terrain bike (ATB) and a mountain bike (MTB)?

This article will explore the nuances and highlight the critical distinctions between these two popular bike categories. We’ll also look into what defines an ATB and give a list of our top five ATBs on the market.

What is “ATB” in Cycling?

ATB stands for “All-Terrain Bike,” and it is precisely what its name suggests: a bike designed to conquer all types of terrain. Whether you’re navigating gravel paths, urban streets, or even rough off-road trails, ATBs are built to handle it all with ease.

The all-terrain aspect refers to the ground that can be covered. While some bikes are really built for paved surfaces (road), some for the velodrome (track), and some for the poorer surfaces (fat tired), the ATB is a jack of all trades. It’s designed specifically to be a good choice for almost all terrains.

They are versatile bikes that boast a balance of durability, agility, and comfort, making them ideal for riders who crave adventure and want to explore, regardless of the surface.

ATB Bike Meaning

An ATB bike is specifically engineered to tackle a wide range of terrains, from paved roads to unpaved trails, and everything in between.

ATBs usually feature robust frames and tires with a tread pattern that provides excellent traction. Additionally, ATBs are equipped with components that enhance their versatility, such as suspension forks that absorb shocks, wide-ranging gearing systems for different speeds, and reliable brakes for optimal control.

When it comes to a flat surface, they aren’t the fastest, but they definitely don’t try to be. What they lack in straight line speed they more than make up in versatility.

All-Terrain Bike vs Mountain Bike

While both ATBs and MTBs share a love for conquering diverse landscapes, the two have several notable differences.

All-terrain cycles are actually pretty self explanatory; they are made to handle all terrains without prioritising one over another.

On the other hand, Mountain bikes, whilst often seen on the roads, are really made to handle off-road conditions. Just because they’re seen more frequently doesn’t necessarily mean they are the most appropriate. In fact, in many instances, an ATB would actually be more suitable.

Despite being trendy as of late, the story of the ATB really dates back to the 80s, where the term was actually introduced to refer to a generic ‘off-road’ bike. Since then, the name has largely been replaced by ‘mountain bikes’, which has become more of a household name (despite actually originating from a brand name).

These days, ‘mountain bike’ is really used as an umbrella term to cover many types of bike that have at least some off-road capabilities. Arguably, the ATBs that are sold today fall under this umbrella.

Is an All-Terrain Bike a Mountain Bike?

At this point, you’d be right to ask whether an all-terrain bike is just another term for a mountain bike.

The answer is both yes and no. While all-terrain bikes can handle similar terrains as mountain bikes, they often prioritize versatility and comfort over the sheer performance-focused design of mountain bikes. This distinction impacts the bike’s overall geometry, components, and intended use.

Whilst they can both be used in similar ways, where people often use an MTB as a ‘serve-all’ bike, it would actually be more appropriate to use an ATB if you were to only have one bike.

An ATB sits somewhere between an MTB and a modern gravel bike. If a gravel bike is an off-road bike with roots in road-racing, then an ATB is for all-terrains but with its roots in ‘mountain biking’.

What is the Difference Between ATB and MTB?

Let’s explore the key differences between ATBs and MTBs that set them apart from each other:

Suspension

ATBs might have only front suspension or even no suspension, offering a more rigid ride suited for a mix of on-road and off-road adventures.

On the other hand, Mountain bikes typically have more advanced suspension systems, with both front and rear suspension, providing excellent shock absorption on challenging mountain trails.

Frame Geometry

Mountain bike frames are designed to optimise stability and manoeuvrability in rugged terrains, often featuring a slacker head tube angle and longer wheelbase.

Conversely, ATBs prioritise a more upright riding position and a frame geometry suitable for both on-road and off-road riding.

Tire Selection

Mountain bikes commonly employ wider and knobblier tires that provide superior traction and grip on loose or muddy surfaces.

ATBs tend to have tires with a less aggressive tread pattern, allowing for a smoother ride on paved roads while still maintaining traction on gravel or light off-road trails.

Accessories

MTBs are not normally designed for extended trips, but are usually an excellent choice for vigorous off-road rides.

ATBs on the other hand are generally adorned with attachments, such as panniers, bottle racks and frame bags, so there’s usually mounts for these. This makes them an excellent choice for bikepacking or as a trekking bike.

Handlebars

When it comes to handlebars, ATBs are surprisingly diverse. They come in a range of shapes and sizes, from drop all the way to flat, and can easily be customised for personal preference.

On MTBs however, the overwhelming majority of bars are either flat or risers.

DISCLAIMER

This post discusses the fastest electric bikes in the world. However, most e-bikes are NOT allowed on public roads or land as they are not fitted with a speed limiter, as required in most countries. In the UK, Europe, and Australia, this limit is 15.5mph. In the USA, it is 20mph. Learn more about e-bike laws here. The electric bikes discussed in this post can only be used on private land.

What to Consider When Buying a Fast Mountain Electric Bike?

Electric MTB Power & Speed

Although it’s perhaps an oversimplification of things, ultimately the more powerful the motor fitted to an e-bike, the faster it will go. This is why the fastest MTB ebikes have extremely powerful motors.

Charging an Electric Mountain Bike

Like other fast electric bikes, and all electric bikes for that matter, charging a fast electric mountain bike is a simple process. Most e-MTBs can be charged by connecting a cord to the bike directly, or removing the battery and taking it to the plug socket. Be aware charge times can vary dramatically between different models.

Fast e-bike Mountain Range

Unfortunately, the fastest mountain electric bikes, aren’t going to have the greatest range, nor are they going to be cheap to run per mile. Like fast folding electric bikes fast e-bikes are focused on doing just that, going fast.

Are Electric Bikes Good For Mountain Biking?

Arguably electric bikes first caught on in the arena of mountain biking. They enabled riders to spend less time on the uphills and more time enjoying the thrills and spills of downhill riding, or flowing singletrack.

These days, the best electric mountain bikes are hyper-specialized, whether that’s ultra-lightweight machines for long-distance cross-country riding, or uber-powerful beasts for summiting the toughest of gradients.

‘Mullet’ wheel setup

After producing a very limited run of the Revolution XX, a bike which was capable of reaching speeds over 70mph, HPC decided to release another high-speed bike, the Revolution X9 Special Edition.

In our opinion this bike isn’t just about pure power either – yes its has 9000W motor – but it has other interesting component features that have clearly been chosen to help the bike perform when ridden at speed.

Pros

  • 20 speed gearing
  • 100 mile range

Coming in at number two on our list of the fastest electric mountain bikes is the Hallomotor FC1. Like all bikes on our list, with eye-watering top speeds, caution should be exercised at all times when riding them.

The FC-1’s top speed is thanks to a massive 5000W motor which is housed in the rear wheel of the bike.

Like most high speed electric bikes, the FC-1 has mountain bike cues in its design with suspension at both the front and rear. Large disc brakes ensure the bike can be brought to a stop from the very high speeds it can manage.

Pros

  • High speed e-MTB for the price

Cons

  • Specification not clear
  • Single-speed gearing renders the bike almost unusable without power

Another HPC or Hi Power Cycles e-MTB is on our list. The Revolution X is HPC’s bread-and-butter full-suss model that can be brought in various motor powers. The standard 6000W version can hit speeds of 55mph, with the 7000W and 8000W motor versions delivering much faster speeds, albeit at a higher price point.

It’s nice to see that HPC allow you to customise the look of the Revolution X. Indeed, the frame is available four standard frame colours at no extra cost. Custom colours and matched wheel rims can be added for a further cost.

Pros

  • US Class 2 compliant
  • 60mph top speed is FAST

Cons

  • Pricey before you get to the optional upgrades

Motorbike grade braking

Somewhat cheaper than other bikes on our list and arguably also the best looking, the Stealth B-52 is the fourth bike on our list.

Running a rear hub motor the bike is capable of speeds up to 50mph when using its electrical assistance.

As with all of these fast electric mountain bikes, they require huge onboard battery power to deliver rapid forward momentum. As such, the bike weighs a staggering 64kg.

The B52 is available in two frame colours, pitch black of pitch black fluo.

Pros

  • Strong looks
  • Acceptable range
  • Priced around the 5-figure mark

Cons

  • Hub motor is basic

Frame welded in US

The Scout Pro from HPC is fast e-MTB that looks alot like many standard electric mountain bikes. The difference is that a mid-drive motor with 3000W can be fitted to give this bike a top speed of over 40mph.

Pros

  • Throttle and torque sensor combination
  • Frame made and finished in California

Cons

  • Clunky battery integration
  • Customisation raises prices

6. HPC Titan Pro

Extremely fast electric mountain bikes usually have one major downside – their riding range – that’s the distance they can be ridden between charges.

With the R22 Everest, Optibike set out to make a bike that could theoretically climb the height of the highest mountain in the world. The result is a bike that has a 3250Wh battery and a 300 mile range.

Pros

  • Rohloff hub gear is long-lasting
  • Genuinely useful riding range
  • 190Nm motor torque

Are Folding Mountain Bikes Worth It?

Folding bikes are definitely worth the money, depending on what you’re planning on using it for. Their versatile nature allows you to take them anywhere, whether you’re commuting through the city or traversing challenging terrains in the great outdoors.

Mountain bikes are very practical anyway, but the folding aspect makes them especially great, not just for commuters but for people who’d like to take their bikes to a more secluded route further afield. They can enhance accessibility and empower individuals to embrace a new and exciting form of exercise.

Investing in a folding mountain bike offers a number of benefits that make them truly worthwhile. If you want to cycle but don’t have much storage space at home, if you’re adventurous on the weekend but the city is limiting your routes, or if you don’t know what you’ll be up against, folding mountain bikes have you covered.

VIDEO: FOLDABLE MOUNTAIN BIKE

Are Foldable Mountain Bikes Safe?

Folding mountain bikes can be considered safe if you respect their intended use. When handled with care and caution like any other bike, folding bikes (and folding mountain bikes) are generally as safe as their non-folding counterparts.

Of course, as with any folding bike, it’s important to ensure you fully secure the folding mechanism and regularly inspect it for any signs of wear or tear. The components of the rest of the bike are comparable to their non-folding counterparts, give or take. That’s to say, they aren’t generally made of lower-quality materials except on the very low-end models produced.

Mountain bikes are rugged and are made to be used and enjoyed. Don’t expect trail performance out of every model though, especially if its intended use is a short cycle in the countryside.

However, it is important to note that the safety of a bike ultimately depends on its design, construction, and user maintenance. Regular maintenance, such as checking and adjusting the brakes and gears, is also essential to ensure safe operation.

Additionally, you should follow proper cycling safety practices like other bikes. Wear a helmet and protective gear if appropriate, and cycle safely.

The original folding mountain bike from Montague, the Paratrooper, is a war machine. It’s based on a design intended for landing air troopers and soldiers, where a robust folding bike would prove to be extremely practical.

It has 24 speeds, a front suspension, and some excellent mechanical disc brakes. It’s smart and rugged, doing equally well on tough weekend runs through the trails and city hops as a commuter.

It’s designed to fold without any breaks in the frame’s tubing, which makes it extremely strong (although at the cost of being a little less compact). Nevertheless, it’s still a fairly quick folder, clocking in at under 20 seconds to convert from cyclist to pedestrian. This is largely thanks to Montague’s patented folding design. Just flick the quick-release lever, and you’re on your way.

As a mountain bike, it’s not a surprise that you can count on the suspension. It’s got an SR Suntour suspension fork at the front end, allowing a good degree of glide over most obstacles you’re likely to encounter.

It is an excellent choice for mountain bikers who want something that’s good value, portable, rugged, and also somewhat discreet. It certainly has more of a military aesthetic than an MTB one.

  • Wheel Size: 26″
  • Folded Size: 82 x 102 x 23cm
  • Gears: 21-speed

  • Affordable.

  • Good ratings.

  • Electric.

Step into the future with the Ancheer Folding Electric Mountain Bike, a true fusion of technology and functionality.

Gone are the fiddly spokes, replaced by a mesmerizing and practical five-knife integrated design. This isn’t just useful (and tidy!), it provides a clean and sharp aesthetic as well.

It’s in a bold blue and white color scheme that is modest, but, if we’re honest, is likely to look pretty dirty once you start taking it offroad.

It’s not just a folding mountain bike; it’s a pedelec as well! As an electric bike, it offers the advantage of a little push when needed. Equipped with a 250W motor that can reach a top speed of 15mph and a battery life of up to 30 miles, no one is complaining. Just don’t expect it to carry you up the hill; you still need to move your legs, unfortunately.

The LED control panel adds an extra touch of modernity and convenience, allowing you to navigate through various riding modes and monitor battery life effortlessly.

It’s equipped with high-strength magnesium forks, which should be fine under most conditions, giving you good handling and stability.

The reviews are primarily promising, but it must be said that it’s a little heavy at 60 lbs (27kg). This is undoubtedly due to the electric equipment.

3. Change 812 Offroad MTB

  • Folded Size: 76 x 94 x 36cm
  • Gears: 20-speed

  • Lightweight folding mountain bike.

  • Big wheels.

  • Capable of extremely steep climbs.

Introducing the Change 812 Off-Road MTB, a great companion for your cycling adventures. When you invest in the Change 812, you’re not just getting a bike – you’re receiving a complete package.

Alongside this exceptional bicycle, you’ll find a versatile black canvas carry bag, allowing you to easily transport and store your bike. A convenient seat bag for pedals is also included, providing a secure place to keep your pedals when not in use.

But that’s not all – the Change 812 allows you to choose your preferred pedals, be it MTB, SPD, or flat, allowing you to customize your ride to match your unique style and preferences.

The standard bike weighs in at just 28lbs (12.8kg), which is pretty impressive. Its 20-speed gearing might not be the highest on this list, but it’s more than enough in most instances.

Speaking of impressive, it boasts its lowest gear ratio at 0.6, meaning you’ll have the torque needed to take on decent ascents. No hill is too much for the Change 812.

It also comes standard with some great high end specs, such as the 32 float air shock forks (costing $500 individually!). They’re great for shock absorption for the obstacles that you’re likely to find. Whilst it isn’t the cheapest model, it’s a great high-performance investment if you’ve got the cash.

4. Montague Paratrooper ELITE

  • UK Flag £2,410
  • US Flag $2,950
  • EU Flag €2,770

Prices are approximate

  • Weight: 27lbs (12.25kg)
  • Wheel Size: 27.5″
  • Folded Size: 91 x 71 x 30cm
  • Gears: 30-speed

Top-end components.

Great technical bike.

Classy colour scheme.

Finally, we have the cream of the crop when it comes to folding mountain bikes. The Paratrooper ELITE from Montague is the high-spec upgrade of its relative the Paratrooper. And while the Paratrooper is a great folding mountain bike, the ELITE is even better if you’ve got the money.

24 speeds become 30, the bike drops roughly 2kg in weight, and its folded size is even a little bit smaller. It’s got large 27.5″ wheels that can roll over anything, a full Shimano XT drivetrain, Shimano XT hydraulic disc brakes, and even Rockshox Recon suspension to cushion all the blows. It’s good for a mountain bike, let alone a folding one!

As always with Montague, we’ve got the patented folding system that maintains the structure and strength of the frame. This is especially good news when considering what this bike is designed to go through. Races and time trials, this bike was made for them. And if you don’t believe that, feel free to test their lifetime warranty.

It’s an exceptional piece of engineering and design that comes at a cost. But, we’re happy to see that Montague has taken something great and made it even better.

Does Weight Matter in Mountain Bikes?

When it comes to mountain bikes, as with pretty much all bike, weight does arguably matter a lot. But the downside to this is that a lighter bike will pretty much always come at a premium in terms of pricing.

The main benefits of having a lighter mountain bike of course being able to climb up hill with greater ease. Not to mention, manoeuvring around obstacles and allowing the bike to move underneath you while scaling technical features is also much easier if the bike is lighter as there’s less weight to move.

Another great benefit of having a lighter mountain bike can be when needing to carry it: sometimes adventures can get very off grid and thus calls for the need to pick up and carry the MTB from time to time such as over gates or up impossibly steep climbs.

What is a Good Weight for a Mountain E-Bike?

Typically electric mountain bikes that weight around 20-30kg would be considered pretty good, with the latter ground being the most common. It will come with no surprise that the lighter end of the spectrum will cost a fair bit more in general, however there are some bargains that are an exception to this rule.

But given a mountain bike has a lot more componentry to it, with the technology and extra materials needed to create key features such as dropper posts and suspension, the latter of which is common both front and rear, it’s not surprising that e-MTB’s are heavier than other bikes such as small folding bikes or other off-road offerings such as gravel bikes.

Although it’s got to be said, it would be unfair to start to pit the weight of any type of mountain bike against the likes of gravel, or even hybrid bikes. But believe us when we say, these bikes featured on this piece are super impressive when it comes to their weight.

How Much Does the Average Mountain E-Bike Weigh?

Average weight for a standard electric mountain bike could be around 25kg to 40kg, which is a big range but when some mountain bikes have rear (as well as front suspension) it can be easy to understand why the weight ranges so much.

More so, the motor and battery that is used to create said electric mountain bike will also play a big part in how light, or heavy, the bike is. This is the same with other electric bikes (typically lighter bikes like road and gravel included) because some systems are much more streamline and thus lightweight than other options. But as always, the lighter option is often much more expensive.

The material of the e-MTB will also play a role in how heavy or light the bike is, the same can be said with regards to the size of the bike: a smaller size being lighter as a smaller frame means less materials.

Weight comparison between a bag of dog food and an Orbea Urrun 40 2023

Is a Carbon Electric Mountain Bike Worth It?

A carbon electric mountain bike is definitely worth it when it comes to weight saving. By nature, all e-bikes are generally heavier than a non motorised push bike as there is of course a motor and battery (along with a list of other smaller components) added to enable a bike to be electric.

Therefore a great way to ensure the weight is pushed down is of course looking at making the materials as lightweight as possible. Cue carbon fibre: the very popular, strong and stiff material chosen to create pretty much all light weight cycling machines.

Many other popular and super light weight electric bikes are also made of carbon fibre as it’s a very effective way to push down the weight and improve the ride quality: carbon is more responsive and stiff compared to aluminium.

This is undoubtedly the perfect option for you if you happen to be in the market for a full suspension electric cross country mountain bike. Trek have basically taken their Olympic gold medal winning (thanks to Jolanda Neff) cross country bike and thrown on an integrated motor. The bike was specifically designed and built to feel the exact same as a regular cross country bike. Therefore it’s a really great option for those also looking to maybe race some e-MTB races. Another cool aspect of this bike is that the battery is removable, therefore just pop it out (making it 2.9kg lighter) and you have a conventional, full carbon XC bike. Pretty cool huh.

What is a Mountain Electric Bike?

An electric mountain is like a regular mountain bike but with either pedal assistance or a throttle included as an extra feature. Like normal mountain bikes, they’re made for riding on rough, muddy and hilly terrain.

Wide, knobbly tyres and suspension – either at the front or the front and the rear – help the bike perform when the going gets tough. Wide handlebars help the rider maintain control and large disc brakes bring the bike to a stop, even when travelling at speed.

The electric part of an e-MTB consists of a motor, battery and display or control unit. The motor, which delivers the added drive, is placed either in the rear wheel (the cheapest electric bike use this type) or around the bike’s crankset. This type of motor is commonly known as mid-mount.

An onboard battery provides power to the motor and the display enables the rider to control the motor’s settings. Most electric mountain bikes have various assistance settings, that way, different riding situations can be accounted for.

Electric bike batteries obviously need charging, but the cost, in the grand scheme of things, is pretty negligible.

Who Are Mountain E-Bikes For?

When electric bikes started to draw mass appeal, arguably it was e-mountain bikes that saw the biggest take-up from cyclists. This was because they enabled all riders to take the sting out of the uphills and enjoy more of the downhills – whether that was gentle downhills in parks and public spaces, or something more adrenaline-fuelled at a local mountain bike park.

However, electric mountain bikes aren’t simply for breezing uphills and flying down the other side. Indeed, many a study has shown that riders on electric mountain bikes expend nearly enough the same amount of energy as those riding regular mountain bikes.

With the extra assistance, riders tend to ride further and faster, enjoying their bike more and getting fitter in the process. This realisation has led to a relatively new breed of electric mountain bikes. They have paired down electric assistance which still delivers power uphill but doesn’t inhibit the bike’s handling when railing down the other side of the hill.

Whilst some electric mountain bikes can adapt to riding on tarmac, they’re not the ideal bike type to ride to and from work. Knobbly tyres are a drag on hard surfaces and large amounts of suspension become unnecessary.

When all is said and done, any bicycle is good for commuting. We think of the physical health and mental health benefits. We are using sustainable transport to get around. We are part of a growing demographic which is helping to shape the way we all should safely flow through towns and cities.

Travelling by bicycle for your commute is a commitment that you make to yourself, other road users, pedestrians and your employer each day. It should come with as few restrictions or limits to your progress as possible. Mainly in order that you keep at it, come rain or shine. Therefore, it should be fun.

If you only ride one bicycle, choosing the right one is important whether you only use it to commute, or to explore more of the world around you in your free time. Or join a cycling club. Or sign up for free rides with your mates that are hosted by your local bike shop.

Mountain bikes should be a strong consideration if you want a versatile, adaptable machine with an upright riding position and flexibility for recreational use as well as for your commute. And if you have a yearning for adventure.

What Are Mountain Bikes Good For?

Most activities that you can carry out on a bicycle can be done on a regular mountain bike. They are rugged, dependable, fun and as adventurous as you want them to be within their own limitations. Downhill-specific mountain bikes tend to rely on their own terrain for maximum enjoyment.

The riding position is generally comfortable so you can ride on rough surfaces for longer. They have a flat handlebar to give an upright riding position. There are a very wide range of gear ratios to help you climb hills or pick up speed when you have a following wind. The smallest chainring on the front can be as low as 28 teeth and a rear cog at 42 teeth is commonly used.

The wheels come in a range of sizes depending upon whether you wish to negotiate kerbs, rocks, or packed in dirt trails. You can ride on most terrains with differing degrees of control and speed.

Some mountain bikes come with mounts for panniers and racks. Most fenders / mudguards are clipped onto the seat post and protection at the front is less generous than a road bike or hybrid bike. There are models to suit all budgets, endeavours and expectations.

History of Mountain Bikes

We could start in the late 19th Century with traditional single-speed bicycles being adapted by the military to travel across the countryside to transport troops. Then move forward to the early 1950s, to the suburbs of Paris, where Velo Cross Club Parisien (VCCP) converted road bikes using forks from mopeds and altered the gear shifting. Their motives were driven by the tedium they were experiencing with the cyclocross racing scene in France.

We don’t really associate Paris with mountains so we look to the USA where, at the same time, single speed bikes loved by paperboys were being adapted with ‘balloon’ tyres and flat handlebars. Pioneers and outliers – not yet a cottage industry.

Moving forward 25 years and staying in the USA, like-minded kids in northern California were pursuing thrills by taking ramshackled but retro machines and pimping them for one-off descents of local mountains.

The brakes became too cooked from overuse and the wheels were too brittle for more than one run. But these gangs were racing and having fun. And the ideas and improvements began to collide as much as they did. These bicycles had a name – ‘Klunkers’.

Once organised racing came to pass, the engineering moved from the junkyard to the basements and sheds of these kids who gave us the first bespoke mountain bikes. Road bike manufacturers soon injected their own lightweight materials to the mountain bike stable. It’s delightful to know that some of the names of the trendsetters were attached to companies involved in designing and manufacturing the first retail mountain bikes, designers like Gary Fisher and Tom Ritchey.

Mass-manufacture brought the mountain bike to the world in the 1980s and a genre arrived in the 1990s. The new technology they brought included triple-ring cranksets, gear shifting on the handlebars and smaller wheels than road bikes and single speed bicycles, at 26 inches / 559 mm. The geometry of the frame changed gradually to a position suited to comfort and manoeuvrability. Ground clearance to avoid rocks and spacing to prevent mud from blocking the rotation of the wheels became necessary too.

In subsequent years mountain bike riding diversified into specific areas: cross-country, trail and downhill. With these specific changes designers and manufacturers brought innovations and crossover over from motorsports like the disc brake and hydraulic suspension telescopic forks which dampened the impact of hitting rocks and tree stumps. And they were amongst the first bicycles to go electric.

There are now mountain bikes manufactured for other disciplines too – All Mountain and Enduro. Not all of these are strongly recommended for commuting. You can pay thousands for the same mountain bikes ridden by today’s professionals and buy them from your local bike shop or online. If you just wish to try a local disused railway line, or tackle your toughest local trail, then there are entry-level machines to meet your needs.

There are dealership networks across the world. You will be able to get them serviced and at home DIY / maintenance is no different to road bikes or hybrids unless you have suspension. If you do wish to adventure in a national park or lumpy transcontinental trail, there are forums and websites packed with GPX routes to add to your bicycle computer and advice on where and when to travel safely.

Can You Commute on a Mountain Bike?

Mountain bikes are designed to handle rougher terrain than found on an average commute. The riding position will be comfortable and reassured as a result. Your ride may be a little awkward and imposing on some of the specialist machines but a trail or cross-country mountain bike will be manageable.

You will be able to soak up potholes and bumps with relative ease. The lower tyre pressure will give you a softer landing. You may not travel as quickly as other commuting bicycles. If you take one off the roads too then your cleaning and maintenance regime should be more frequent if you want a clean, reliable ride on a Monday morning. Collected dust and grit will mix with your lubricants and form an unhelpful paste to eat your components and chain.

You may feel slightly cumbersome when locking and unlocking them and they tend to take up a lot of space on public transport. A specialist downhill mountain bike has a wheelbase (the distance between the centre point of each of the front and rear axles) which is up to 25% longer than a road bike. The knobbly tyres will hum on roads, rolling heavily and wearing more quickly than on the surfaces they are designed for. You can buy slicker tyres for use on the roads as you wish.

Why Are Mountain Bikes so Popular?

Because we all have a little bit of the devil in us, right? Mountain bikes give us the best of all worlds. They can be ridden quickly. Their gearing requires less pedalling effort. They can be a lot of fun. The ride is usually comfortable.

The best environment for mountain bikes is off-road. Their design is made for clearing nature’s obstacles and barriers.

If you are fortunate enough to live within a short ride of the countryside, then new permissive paths and routes open up to you, adding some more value to a weekend in the countryside. Their rugged, durable design provides for year-round riding. They are more adept than gravel bikes when ploughing through wet mud.

Mountain Bike Pros + Cons

PROSCONS

MTB FAQs

Are MTBs Good for Roads?

There are more effective bicycles than a mountain bike to use when travelling on roads. But still,  they are perfectly adept for doing so and can tackle potholes, towpaths, trails and city centre gridlock with aplomb. If your ride is confined to butter-smooth fresh asphalt it may become a chore.

Are Mountain Bikes Fast?

How fast do you want them to go? They are brilliantly fast and thrilling on the surfaces they are designed for. It’s one reason that racers wear body armour. You’ll smile when you look at any downhill race via the rider’s GoPro. The gearing and weight will limit the top speed on reliable surfaces.

Are Mountain Bikes Harder to Ride?

Whilst they have a comfortable overall riding position, the mass and size of a mountain bike will work your upper body more than other bicycles would for an equivalent ride. A standing start on a heavier bicycle or getting one up hills works the arms as well as the quads and calves.

Are Mountain BIkes Good for Long Distance?

If you were to ride the shortest possible route between two points on a map, you would do it on a mountain bike. They are reliable, fun, comfortable and get you on and off most terrains. If you were to suggest riding them via clean, dry roads, there will be more efficient bicycles you would use.

Are Mountain BIkes Good for Going Uphill?

Mountain Bikes are particularly adept at going uphill. Although weighing more on average than other bicycles, they usually have a very wide gear ratio. This makes pedalling much easier. Your cadence will be more rapid. This means you will not have to force your momentum using fewer muscle groups.

Can You Commute on a Mountain Bike?

A mountain bike is an acceptable commuter. Some versions will offer more overall comfort and efficiency when you exclusively use roads. Switching the knobbly tyres to semi slick ones will help you over the tarmac. Check that they have mounts for accessories that help you stay stable and dry.

Mountain Bike for Commuting to Work [Pros + Cons]

Though not necessarily your first port of call if you’re a commuter, there are certainly a number of mountain bike commuter benefits, particularly if you cross rougher ground en route to work.

Their upright riding position, sturdier tyres and more durable build lend themselves excellently to less straightforward commutes, but they can also be too heavy in some cases, as well as slow on other surfaces and lacking versatility.

If riding through urbanised areas, you may find mountain bikes add a fair amount of drag, while full-suspension mountain bikes simply won’t be the worth the extra money if all you’re using it for is cycling to and from work.

So, while there are definite advantages to using a mountain bike for commuting, choose wisely, and consider whether your environment would complement one.

Road Bike or Mountain Bike for Commuting?

Road bikes for easier journeys, but commuting on a mountain bike can certainly make sense when facing that little bit more challenging terrain.

Road bikes may be a more no-frills model by and large, and typically offer less traction and grip than mountain bikes, but if you want the best value for money for simply getting you from A to B, they’re about as good as you can get.

At least for brighter weather or easier routes, road bikes are still a better option, though don’t discount mountain bikes altogether.

However, mountain bikes are definitely not a bad choice for complete beginner cyclists who are anxious about speed bumps or potholes.

Giant is one of the “giants” of the bicycle manufacturing industry, having been creating premium bikes at competitive prices since 1981.

The brand has been instrumental in pushing the world of bicycles forward, and it came up with two major technological advances that later became industry standard.

Read More:

They were the first company to mass-produce carbon road bikes, and make them with compact geometry. These methods are now adopted all over the industry. Giant bicycles and Giant bicycle accessories are made entirely in-house, meaning they control the manufacturing processes from start to end.

Since the pandemic started last year, people are forced to find entertainment that doesn’t involve indoor activities and large crowds. As a result, many people, including myself started hiking, riding bicycles and running more frequently than ever before. This has led to more people buying bicycles.

While some Giant bicycles may not be the most budget-friendly option for beginners, they’re definitely still worth considering, especially if you intend on sticking to the activity.

The great thing about Giant bicycles is that you can find an abundance of Giant bicycle accessories that are compatible with all of their models. This lets you customise your bicycle however you want, ensuring superior comfort, convenience and performance.

So, whether you’re planning on becoming a road cyclist, a mountain biker, or someone who plans on riding for exercise a few times a week, you’re bound to find a Giant bicycle that fits your needs. Here are some of their most popular models.

Road Bikes

TCR Advanced SL 0 Disc

This model might not look different from its predecessor, but if you pay close attention, you’ll notice that it’s been completely revamped to be more aerodynamic, stiffer and lighter. All of these things make it the best all-around road bikes available on today’s market.

It weighs only 6.5kg and it’s built to be stiff for exceptional pedalling efficiency and laterally flexible for hard cornering. It sports a clean look and tubeless carbon rims and spokes.

The only downside to this high-end road bike is its price tag that’s a whopping $13.499 (AUD). Should you go for this model, regular cleaning and maintenance can help protect your bike so you can get the most of it.

TCR Advanced Pro 1 Disc

The TCR Advanced Pro 1 Disc is the more budget-friendly alternative to the SL 0 Disc. It’s built with stiffness, speed and comfort in mind. It features a Shimano Ultegra drivetrain and a broad range cassette offering you all the gears you need to ride on any surface.

It also features Ultegra hydraulic disc brakes that provide reliable stopping performance and outstanding modulation consistently. Last but not least, it features the renown Giant’s tubeless wheel system. This road bike comes at about $4.500 (AUD).

Road-E + 1 Pro

Even though electric bicycles in Australia have grown in popularity, it’s not that often you see a performance road bike that features a pedal-assist motour. Giant, as one of the manufacturers at the forefront of pushing new technologies, has changed that with the E + 1 Pro.

This model is packed with features that cater to riders looking to ride for longer or faster. The frame is made of Aluxx-SL aluminium, and the bike features rechargeable Giant EnergyPak lithium-ion batteries, Giant SyncDrive Pro motour and a Shimano Ultegra drivetrain.

This bike is available in multiple sizes, so no matter if you’re male, female, or want to buy one for your kids, you’ll find a suitable model. As you can notice, this bicycle is made using Giant’s own motours, batteries, etc., meaning you can easily find replacement parts and Giant bicycle accessories should you ever need them.

Mountain Bikes

Trance Advanced Pro 29 1

This is one of the best mountain trail bikes ever, and the new version keeps all the fundamentals of previous models, but it also comes with upgrades that push its performance even further.

For instance, the SRAM GX Eagle drivetrain is replaced with a Shimano XT 12-speed drivetrain. The suspension on the Trance Advanced Pro 29 has only 115mm of rear travel, but you can ride it as if it had 160mm due to its slack head angle and long reach.

While this isn’t something groundbreaking, Giant has really committed to it, making it standard.

Anthem Advance Pro 29 1

The Anthem Advance Pro 29 is considered the ultimate cross-country race bike. It features a carbon frame, carbon XCR 1 29 wheels, a Fox Float DPS performance Elite shock, 100mm Fox 32 Float SC Performance Elite fork and 90mm rear wheel travel Maestro suspension.

This mountain bike is capable of powering over steep trails, allowing you to quickly pedal away from competition, and provide an enjoyable ride for casual riders.

Talon 29 1

The Talon 29 1 is a hard trail bike, ideal for those who want to get into racing and those who want to explore singletracks. The newest version comes with quite a few upgrades, such as a single 10-speed drivetrain, updated geometry, more rugged and wider tyres and an SXC32-2 RL 100mm suspension fork.

The Talon is a great choice for those who are new to racing and are into recreational riding. Its lower stack and shorter reach make it a great alternative for people looking for a more comfortable, upright ride.

Commuter Bikes

Escape 1 Disc

This bicycle is equipped to take on the city streets and cinder rail trails. The Escape 1 Disc doesn’t come with racks and fenders by default, but you can get mounting Giant bike accessories to add them should you choose to do so.

The bicycle has an upright riding position, allowing you to take in the surroundings and pay attention to traffic, while the damped ride won’t beat you up when riding for extended periods of time.

It also features a double-chainring drivetrain that offers a broad range of gearing allowing you to handle most types of terrain.

Lastly, the Escape 1 Disc features puncture-resistant rubber tyres to prevent punctures from the potholes, glass and debris from inner-city roads.
