Best Gravel Bikes under £1000

In recent years, the popularity of gravel bikes has surged within the UK cycling scene. What once began as a niche pursuit has now firmly established itself as a mainstream choice for riders.

Cyclists have increasingly recognized the appeal and versatility of gravel bikes, appreciating the enjoyment they bring to their rides. However, the burning question remains: Can you acquire a quality gravel bike for less than £1000?

Leveraging our extensive expertise within the cycling industry, we’ve scoured the depths of the internet to compile a selection of gravel bikes that not only meet your performance expectations but also keep your wallet intact.

Best Budget Gravel Bikes

Running an alloy frame, carbon fork, Shimano Sora 18 speed gearing and Tektro disc brakes, these days this bike represents excellent value for money.

  3. triban grvl 120 women

    Women’s geometry

    Triban GRVL 120 Women’s

Like most gravel bikes, the GRVL 120 has a more upright riding position, so it’s a great option for someone looking to get into drop bar cycling for the first time.

  4. cube nuroad gravel bike

    Big brand performance

    Cube Nuroad

Not many big bike brands manufacture a gravel bike under £1000 these days (we’re looking at your Specialized and Trek) but Cube do.

  5. vitus substance v2 sora

    More suited to off-road riding

    Vitus Substance V-2 Sora

With 40c tyres, flared handlebars, loads of bottle cage mounts and low-range gearing this is the most ‘off-road’ bike on our list.

  6. marin nicasio+

    Steel frame

    Marin Nicasio+

If you’re after something a bit different for your £1000, then consider the steel-framed Nicasio from Marin. It has simple 1x gearing for fuss-free shifting.

How Much Do Gravel Bikes Cost?

Most gravel bikes these days typically cost over £1000. If your budget for a gravel bike falls below four figures, your options may be more limited.

Considering that gravel bikes are simply another category of bicycles, you might expect to find them available at various price points. However, in our experience, this isn’t often the case.

What can we attribute this to? Well, it could be argued that gravel bikes are primarily designed and intended for avid and regular cyclists rather than occasional riders.

Nonetheless, it’s regrettable because the design of gravel bikes makes them an excellent choice for someone new to cycling. They may not have the same sporty feel as a road bike, but they can handle long rides on smooth roads with ease. They also lack the complexity of a mountain bike with suspension, yet they are still capable of handling light off-road terrain.

With a bit of research, you can find a budget-friendly gravel bike that will serve you well on your bike rides or commutes.

Gravel bike by the seaside

Can You Find Gravel Bikes under £1000?

While the selection of sub-£1000 gravel bikes isn’t vast, it’s reassuring to know that affordable options do exist. Admittedly, within this price range, you won’t find the crème de la crème or the featherweight champions of the gravel bike world. Nevertheless, they should deliver commendable performance for the majority of riders.

Gravel bikes priced below £1000 commonly feature aluminum frames, employ mechanical rather than hydraulic disc brakes, and sport drop handlebars.

To keep costs below the four-figure threshold, manufacturers often economize on crucial components such as gears, brakes, and tires. In some cases, they may opt for less expensive alternatives, eschewing well-established and pricier component brands.

Gravel Bicycle Ride

Can You Get Gravel Bikes under £500?

The realm of sub-£500 gravel bikes is relatively sparse, but it’s not entirely devoid of options for the budget-conscious buyer.

However, when faced with a £500 budget for a new ride, we would strongly lean towards investing in a high-quality hybrid bike. While a hybrid may not offer the same adrenaline-charged experience as a gravel bike, its versatility nearly rivals that of a gravel bike. Furthermore, with a broader array of choices in this price range, we contend that you are more likely to discover a superior bicycle that aligns with your budget.

As with any bicycle purchase, it’s prudent to weigh the advantages and drawbacks before taking the plunge.

What’s the Cheapest Gravel Bike (UK)?

The cheapest gravel bike available in the UK can vary depending on the brand, model, and current promotions or discounts.

The most affordable gravel bike on our list is the Triban Women’s Gravel Bike GRVL 120. At the time of publishing it came in at £599.99.

To find the current cheapest gravel bike in the UK, check with various bicycle retailers, both online and local bike shops. Prices and availability can change over time, and new models are constantly released.

Also be on the lookout for sales, promotions, or clearance deals, as these can sometimes offer significant savings on gravel bikes.

Additionally, consider checking classified ads or online marketplaces for used gravel bikes, as you might find affordable options there as well.

Best Gravel Bikes under £1000

1. Ribble CGR AL – Sport

  • Lights: Optional
  • Fenders: Optional

In the UK, Ribble are known to provide all types of bikes at decent prices. Although this version of the CGR has been around a fair while now, it’s still one of our favourites.

Just sneaking under the £1000 mark, this bike is available in two colours and six frame sizes. Ribble allows you to customise pretty much every part of the bike before you place your order – pretty sweet!

If you plan to ride more off-road than on, then maybe swerve this bike. The tyres and gearing are more suited to tarmac and hardpacked surfaces.

Pros

  • Can be customised before being ordered
  • Specification represents good value for money
  • 35mm tyres as standard

Cons

  • Tyres aren’t suited to off-road riding
  • Gearing spec is setup for faster road riding

  • Gears: 18-speed
  • Wheel Size: 700c
  • Max Load: Not Stated
  • Lights: ❌
  • Fenders: ❌
  • Pannier Rack: ❌

Boardman is another stalwart of the British cycling scene and their range of bikes has long been a go-to, especially in the sub-£1000 category.

The ADV 8.6 is the brand’s lowest-priced gravel bike, but don’t let that put you off. Ride it out of the box and there aren’t many things that will let it down. Sensible 18-speed gears and 38c tyres combine to perform on different rides and different surfaces.

Plus when the time comes, the tubeless-ready wheels can be utilised and a handlebar can be easily slung aboard thanks to the flared handlebars.

Pros

  • Tubeless-ready wheels
  • The sensible gearing ratio is good for first-time riders
  • A flared handlebar is a good touch at this price

Cons

  • Humdrum colour
  • Only four frame sizes

3. Triban GRVL 120 Women’s

  • Fenders: ❌
  • Pannier Rack: ❌

The best women’s specific gravel bike under £1000, goes to this option from Triban – the in-house brand from sports megastore, Decathlon.

We can’t over-egg what a steal this bike is. The comfortable riding position teamed with the simple-to-operate 1×10 gearing makes it ideal as a first gravel bike.

OK, some of the components might not be the most robust, or longest lasting, but if you ride occasionally or just at the weekend, you probably won’t notice.

Pros

  • Sensational value for money
  • Four frame sizes
  • Comfortable, welcoming ride
  • Tubeless compatible wheels and tyres

Cons

  • Gear cabling prevents seamless use of handlebar bag
  • Components might not last the test of time

4. Cube Nuroad

  • Wheel Size: 700c
  • Max Load: 115kg (253lb)
  • Lights: ❌
  • Fenders: ❌
  • Pannier Rack: ❌

Nuroad is Cube’s gravel bike model name and their lowest price option is this bike.

With a specific gravel frame geometry, the Nuroad blends road and mountain bikes to make something fun, yet comfortable to ride.

With neat internal cabling, hidden ports for mudguards and a pannier rack this bike certainly looks the business.

Pros

  • From a trusted big brand
  • Quality 40mm tyres
  • Clearance for 45mm tyres

Cons

  • Weighty for the price
  • We’re not a huge fan of the gearing setup
  • Just one frame colour

5. Vitus Substance V-2

vitus substance v 2 sora
vitus substance v 2 sora gear
vitus substance v 2 sora in use
  • UK Flag £900

Prices are approximate

  • Frame Material: Aluminium
  • Weight: 11kg (25.25lb)
  • Gears: 18-speed
  • Wheel Size: 700c
  • Max Load: Not Stated
  • Lights: ❌
  • Fenders: ❌
  • Pannier Rack: ❌

The most “off-road” gravel bike on our list, the Vitus Substance is more about sitting back and enjoying the ride, than getting places fast.

The Substance would be an ideal partner on a bikepacking trip. The 2×9 Shimano gearing has low enough gears to cope with steep hills or when fully loaded and the flared handlebar design promotes comfort even during long rides.

Completing the Substance is a whole host of bottle cage mounts – although it would be nice to see some on the fork too!

Pros

  • Impressive run of frame sizes (6)
  • Compatible with 650b wheels and 1x drivetrains
  • Proper knobbly 40c tyres

Cons

  • Heavier than some
  • Mechanical disc brakes might not perform well off road
  • No fork bottle mounts

6. Marin Nicasio+

  • UK Flag £965

Prices are approximate

  • Frame Material: Steel
  • Weight: 13.1kg (28.8lb)
  • Gears: 7-speed
  • Wheel Size: XX”
  • Max Load: 150kg (330xlb)
  • Lights: ❌
  • Fenders: ❌
  • Pannier Rack: ❌

The last bike on our list is the Marin Nicasio+. It differs from all the others on our list as it is made from steel, rather than aluminium. Steel is heavier than alloy, but it does deliver a unique and plus ride – plus it’s super hardwearing.

The 1x gearing is simple to operate and the Nicasio+ also has the widest tyres of any bike on our list. At 47mm wide they deliver a carpet-like ride on tarmac.

Although the external gear and brake cabling are less neat, it does make changing a cable super easy, even for a home mechanic with basic tools.

Pros

  • Plush steel ride
  • Eye-popping frame colours
  • External cable routing makes maintenance easier

Cons

  • Heavy
  • Mechanical disc brakes not hydraulic

Budget Gravel Bike Brands in UK

Historically this £1000 pricepoint was uber competitive due to the popular government backed cycle to work scheme. Most employers only allowed employees to buy a bike up to the value of £1000. These days most employers have removed this limit and along with inflationary pressure in the UK, it’s hard to find many gravel bikes below £1000.

A quick peruse of our favourite online retailers show there aren’t a huge number of gravel bikes sold below £1000. Whilst there’s the odd one or two at retailers like Sigma Sports, these are often reduced or in the sale.

Although it didn’t make it onto our list, the Triban gravel bike, is worth a look – it’s essentially the same as the GRVL 120 we included on our list.

At the time of writing, Marin are perhaps the biggest brand with a range of gravel bikes under £1000. Kona is another brand which is also worth a look. Their Rove AL 650 is one of, if not the only gravel below £1000 which is sold with the more off-road friendly 650b wheel size.

If you can stretch your budget a tad, then have a look at Sonder, the brand of outdoor kit experts Alpkit.

Gravel Bikes under $1000

In the past few years, gravel bikes have really taken off. From more humble origins, gravel bikes are now well and truly mainstream.

Riders have cottoned on to their accessibility and how much fun they can be to ride. But can you pick up a decent gravel bike for under $1000?

We’ve used our experience in the cycle industry to scour the internet in order to find a range of gravel bikes that are going to deliver the goods without breaking your bank account.

  1. salsa journeyer advent 650b bikes

    The best option under $1000

    Salsa Journeyer Advent 650b

Salsa is big in the gravel and adventure bike business and although it sells bike for $7500+ it also caters for those on a budget too.

  2. state bicycle co all road

    State Bicycle Co. All-Road

State are well-known for their steel bikes and the All-Road is a “steal” (see what we did there?) at it’s price. It has proper gearing and excellent tires.

  3. diamondback haanjo 2 gravel bike

    Road-orientated gravel bike

    Diamondback Haanjo 2

Finished with lovely gloss blue paint, the Haanjo 2 is another good option. Its arguably better on hard-packed surfaces than off-road.

  4. poseidon dropbar redwood bike

    Setup to take off-road

    Poseidon Dropbar Redwood

With its chunky, knobbly tires this gravel bike is ready to go off-road at a moments notice.

  5. marin dsx 1 gravel bikes

  6. triban grvl 120 women

Although its just under $1000, the GRVL120 includes features of a bike that should cost a hell of alot more.

  7. merlin malt g2 claris gravel bike

    Available in 5 frame sizes

    Merlin Malt G2 Claris

Although its let down by its road gearing setup, the Malt G2 still represents incredible value for money.

Gravel Bicycle Ride

How Much Do Gravel Bikes Cost?

Most gravel bikes these days cost over $1000. If your gravel bike budget is below four figures you’ll certainly have less choice.

Given that gravel bikes are just another type of bike, you’d imagine that they’d be available at all kinds of price points. But in our experience, this isn’t the case.

We browsed a popular online US-based retailer for gravel bikes and of the 100+ models they had for sale, not one was priced below $1000. On the very same website, their selection of hybrid bikes started from just $400.

What do we put this down to? Well, perhaps it can be argued that gravel bikes’ specific design and use are primarily aimed at enthusiastic, regular bike riders rather than those who cycle less often.

It is unfortunate, however, because the design of gravel bikes is such that they are a great first bike for someone getting into riding for the first time. They aren’t as sporty as a road bike, but would happily cope with long rides on tarmac with friends. Nor are they as finickity as a mountain bike with suspension and yet they still cope with some light off-roading.

With a little research you can find yourself one of the best budget gravel bikes to accompany you on your bike rides or commutes.

Gravel bike tire

Can You Get a Gravel Bike under $1000?

Whilst there aren’t a huge number of options available, you can certainly buy a gravel bike for under $1000. At this price, they certainly won’t be one of the best or lightest gravel bikes available, but they should perform well enough for most.

Most gravel bikes between $750 and $1000 tend to be made from aluminium, run mechanical (not hydraulic) disc brakes and have drop handlebars.

To nip under the four-figure price, manufacturers tend to skimp on the standard of key components like gears, brakes and tires.

Some will also look to steer clear of more expensive, but well-known componentry brands like Shimano and SRAM and fit their bikes with less popular brands like Microshift and Tektro.

Gravel bike outdoors

Can You Get a Gravel Bike under $500?

There aren’t many gravel bikes available under $500, but it is possible to buy one at this price.

However, if we had $500 to spend on a gravel bike, we’d much rather spend it on a good quality hybrid bike.

Although a hybrid bike won’t deliver the pedal-to-metal riding of a gravel bike, its versatility almost matches a gravel bike, and with much more choice at this price, we’d argue that you are more likely to find a better bike for your budget.

Like all bike purchases, it’s a good idea to consider the pros and cons before you jump in with both feet.

Retrospec amok gravel bike first impression.

What’s the Cheapest Gravel Bike (USA)?

The cheapest gravel bike in the USA is the Amok Gravel Adventure Bike – on sale at the time of writing below $500. The cycling purists amongst you might argue that this is just a rebranded hybrid bike and, in this case, we’d tend to agree with you.

The bike has flat handlebars (although some gravel bikes have flat handlebars!) and a gear ratio more akin to a hybrid bike. That being said, the Amok should be a good partner for riding on road, gravel and singletrack.

Best Gravel Bikes under $1000

1. Salsa Journeyer Advent 650b

  • US Flag $999

Prices are approximate

  • Frame Material: Aluminium
  • Weight: Not Stated
  • Gears: 9-speed
  • Wheel Size: 650b
  • Max Load: Not Stated
  • Lights: ❌
  • Fenders: ❌
  • Pannier Rack: ❌

Salsa’s Journeyer is available in a variety of models, with four coming in under $1000, but for this guide we chose the 650b Advent model.

The 650b refers to the off-road wheel size, whilst the Advent is the 9-speed gearing system from Microshift. These two components help the Journeyer shine off-road.

Ultimately the Journeyer is all about attainable gravel and road adventures and it does that with aplomb.

Pros

  • From a brand who knows about producing adventure/gravel bikes
  • Top end wheels and tires
  • Loads of frame mounts

Cons

  • 9-speed gearing won’t be enough for some

2. State Bicycle Co. 4130 All-Road

state bicycle 4130 bikes

state bicycle 4130 bikes features
  • US Flag $899.99

Prices are approximate

  • Frame Material: Steel
  • Weight: 12.2kg (27lb)
  • Gears: 11-speed
  • Wheel Size: 650b or 700c
  • Max Load: Not Stated
  • Lights: ❌
  • Fenders: ❌
  • Pannier Rack: ❌

The only steel gravel bike on our list is the State. All-Road 4130. Again, like the Salsa Journeyer we listed above it can be purchased in a variety of guises.

The steel frame and fork, whilst heavy, makes for a reliable and solid base ( as do the thru-axles for the wheels), upon which State has added what has to be said a somewhat hotchpotch of different components. Whilst they won’t deliver the highest performance they’re probably a fair reflection of the overall price of the bike.

Pros

  • Thru-Axles
  • Loads of mounting points
  • Two frame colours
  • Customisation possible pre-purchase

Cons

  • 1kg (3lb) than most on our list
  • Down-specced components
  • Gearing won’t be enough for steep off road ascents

3. Diamondback Haanjo 2

Prices are approximate

  • Frame Material: Aluminium

  • Gears: 18-speed
  • Wheel Size: 700c
  • Max Load: Not Stated
  • Lights: ❌
  • Fenders: ❌
  • Pannier Rack: ❌

Running 37mm tires, the Haanjo 2 from Diamondback is perhaps the most road-orientated gravel bike on our list of budget gravel bikes. Team those tires with 18-speed (46/34T – 11-32T) gearing and you’ve got a bike that shouldn’t feel like riding through treacle on the tarmac.

Although its bang on the $1000 mark, the bike has a heavier aluminium fork rather than a carbon one, but its saving grace is that it includes mounts for fenders a front rack or whatever else you can think to mount to it.

Pros

  • Five frame sizes
  • Premium finish
  • Nice tan wall tires

Cons

  • It’d be nice to have a carbon fork at this price
  • Tires aren’t tubeless

4. Poseidon Dropbar Redwood

poseidon dropbar redwood bike
poseidon dropbar redwood bike in use
poseidon dropbar redwood bike colours
  • US Flag $999

Prices are approximate

  • Frame Material: Aluminium
  • Weight: 13.1kg (29lb)
  • Gears: 10-speed
  • Wheel Size: 650″
  • Max Load: Not Stated
  • Lights: ❌
  • Fenders: ❌
  • Pannier Rack: ❌

Poseidon is one of few bike manufacturers that offer a range of well-priced gravel bikes. For this list, we chose the Dropbar Redwood, primarily for its capability away from tarmac.

The Redwood is sold with Kenda Kadre tires. These are essentially do-it-all mountain bike tires. They’ll be great on gravel, fire roads and singletrack but they’ll feel draggy on tarmac and pavement.

Again, the gearing (1×10) is setup for riding fairly steep off-road climbs, but the largest gear (38×11) should help when speeds are higher.

Pros

  • Shines away from tarmac
  • Thru axles at this price is fantastic
  • Loads of colour and size options

Cons

  • Nearing 30lbs
  • Wide 46cm bars won’t work for shorter riders
  • Stock tires won’t roll well on road

5. Marin DSX 1

marin dsx 1 gravel bike
marin dsx 1 gravel bike sideview
  • US Flag $999

Prices are approximate

  • Frame Material: Aluminium
  • Weight: 11.4kg (25lb)
  • Gears: 11-speed
  • Wheel Size: 700c
  • Max Load: 150kg (330lb)
  • Lights: ❌
  • Fenders: ❌
  • Pannier Rack: ❌

Not every gravel bike has drop handlebars and the DSX 1 from Marin is one bike which has a slightly different setup. The flat handlebars make the bike more welcoming to ride, plus they’ll also help with steering when off-road.

The DSX features thoughtful touches like fork mounts for adding bottles and bags. With fender and pannier mounts, the DSX 1 could also happily adapt to a week’s commuting too.

Pros

  • Flat handlebars are comfortable for all
  • Fork mounts for adding cages and bags
  • External cabling routing for maintenance

Cons

  • 1×11 gearing has limitations

6. Triban GRVL 120

triban grvl 12 women gravel bike

  • US Flag $999

Prices are approximate

  • Frame Material: Aluminium
  • Weight: 10.95kg (24.4lb)
  • Gears: 10-speed
  • Wheel Size: 700″
  • Max Load: Not Stated
  • Lights: ❌
  • Fenders: ❌
  • Pannier Rack: ❌

Gravel riding is all about versatility and the Triban GRVL 120 offers it in spades. The design of the frame is such that it prioritises riding comfort and teamed with the flared handlebars, the bike inspires confidence even when descending on gravel.

The 38×11/40 gearing setup is similar to other bikes on our list. Perhaps it doesn’t have enough ratios to help riders find the perfect pedalling cadence on the road, but for most cyclists it should be more than enough.

Completed with a carbon fork and loads of mounts for bottles, fenders and racks.

Pros

  • Carbon Fork for vibration absorption and reduced weight
  • Flared handlebars for control
  • 1×10 gearing offers potential on and off the road

Cons

  • Only one frame colour

7. Merlin Malt G2 Claris

  • Gears: 16-speed
  • Wheel Size: 700c
  • Max Load: Not Stated
  • Lights: ❌
  • Fenders: ❌
  • Pannier Rack: ❌

Merlin won’t be a familiar name to most in the USA, but in their home country of the UK they have a small, but dedicated following. They offer a range of own-brand bikes, all sensibly priced and specced.

The Malt G2 Claris is sold for under $1000 (much less at the time of writing) and features an aluminium frame, carbon fork, 16-speed gearing and 38mm tires.

The setup of this bike doesn’t make it the ideal off-road partner but if your local routes involve all hardpacked surfaces and you can stomach the shipping costs to the US, then this bike might be for you.

Pros

  • Thru-axle wheels promote excellent gear shifting and ride quality
  • Carbon fork for responsive steering and absorbing the rough stuff

Cons

  • UK>US shipping is costly
  • 34x38T lowest gear isn’t enough for off-road riding
  • 40mm maximum tire clearance

Budget Gravel Bike Brands

In our experience, there are three key bike brands that offer budget gravel bikes. Marin and Salsa are the main two, with State Bicycle Co. a third. Each of these brands doesn’t just have one bike below $1000, they have a number, so if you’re in the market for a gravel bike on a budget, then give these three a look.

As we’ve illustrated in this article there aren’t a huge number of brands that offer gravel bikes below $1000. Indeed, some of the biggest bicycle manufacturers in the world – the likes of Trek and Specialized for example – don’t currently offer a gravel bike below $1000.

People who are looking to buy a bicycle for the first time in a long while are often plagued with questions and insecurity:

  • How much should I spend?
  • How many gears do I need?
  • Are electric bikes worth it?
  • Which bike should I buy?

And it’s completely understandable. There are just so, so many different types and models of bicycles out there. Likewise, the advice around this is often needlessly complicated.

For most people looking for a bike for riding around a town, this is all you really need to know:

  1. Cheap bikes are absolutely fine (especially if you take care of them – plus you can always upgrade later)
  2. Seven gears are plenty for the vast majority of commuters
  3. Electric bikes are amazing, although they’re much more expensive than a normal bike (although still miles cheaper than any motorised vehicle)
  4. Hybrid bikes are the most versatile bike around (although everyone’s needs are different)

Until recently, I’ve been riding hybrid Decathlon bikes almost exclusively.

Why? Because they’re cheap and they get me from A to B. I’m not trying to beat a personal best, nor am I scaling a mountain.

Here are three Decathlon bikes I’ve ridden and enjoyed. Why three? One I had to leave behind after moving country. One was stolen (RIP) and the third (Riverside 500 – pictured below) is still with me.

Best Cheap Commuter Hybrid Bikes

  1. 🇬🇧£350 🇪🇺€300 🇺🇸$549

    Riverside 500

Lightweight, front suspension, 7-speed and very comfortable to ride. Really nice frame design too.

  2. 🇬🇧£500 🇪🇺€450 🇺🇸$600

    Elops 500

A super practical hybrid city bike that comes with fenders and built-in lights as standard.

  3. 🇬🇧£200 🇪🇺€220 🇺🇸$349

    Riverside 100

If you’re on a really tight budget, this a good and reliable for simple rides. 6 gears and pretty light.

Which Type of Bike if Best for Daily Use?

If you want just one bicycle that can handle your daily needs – something that you can comfortable ride on a smooth street or a bumpy trail – I’d recommend a hybrid bike. Hybrids are the generalist of the bicycle world – they’re not the lightest, fastest or most durable, but they can

Each time I’ve bought a hybrid bike. I like hybrid bikes because they can do a bit of everything and can handle most surfaces. They’re not the fastest, lightest or most durable – but they are quick enough, you can carry them down a set of stairs and you can go on a trail with them.

Obviously, everyone’s needs are different, so here’s a quick TL:DR; summary of who each type of bike is for:

  • Hybrid bikes are suitable for individuals who want a versatile bike that can handle a variety of terrains, including paved roads and light off-road trails.
  • Road bikes are suitable for individuals who enjoy cycling on paved roads and want to cover long distances quickly and efficiently.
  • Mountain bikes are suitable for individuals who want to ride on rough, rocky terrain and navigate steep inclines and declines.
  • Folding bikes are suitable for individuals who need a bike that is easy to store and transport in small spaces.
  • Gravel bikes are suitable for individuals who want a bike that can handle a mix of pavement and rough, unpaved terrain.
  • City bikes are suitable for individuals who want a comfortable and practical bike for short commutes and city riding.

Should I Buy an Electric Bike?

I love electric bikes. It’s like cycling with an endless tailwind. What’s more, people who purchase an e-bike see their average bicycle use rise to 9.2km per day (from 2.1km per day for traditional bikes). This discounts any “lazy” arguments aimed at e-bike owners, as people ride more than 4x more on average.

That said, electric bikes are expensive compared to normal bikes (although still miles cheaper than owning and running any motorised vehicle).

However, there are a few relatively cheap e-bikes around that are perfect for commuting. In particular, I’d recommend the Engwe P26, which offers everything you need in an commuter e-bike.

Best Budget E-Bike for Commuters

  1. 🇬🇧£632 🇪🇺€729 🇺🇸$799

    Engwe P26 E-Bike

A versatile hybrid e-bike with a 50+ mile range. Looks cool and is extremely comfortable promoting an upright posture.

Engwe also have several other cheap electric bike options, while you can also find budget e-bikes at the likes of Himiway, Aventon and Ancheer.

Fixed-gear bicycles (fixies) are more popular than ever. They’re quickly becoming one of the most beloved urban bikes and their unique, retro aesthetic makes them stand out on the road. Fixies are about more than just style, though.

They provide a ride quality like no other and can even make you a better cyclist. Many people also prefer fixies for their simplicity, which makes them great bikes for beginners who just want to get on the road without any complications. Their stripped-back nature makes them lighter and considerably faster than other bikes.

While some fixed-gear bikes are undoubtedly expensive, there’s no need to spend a fortune on one. In fact, a cheap fixie not only represents value for money but usually offers a purer riding experience – which is why cyclists prefer these bikes in the first place!

Read on as we explore the most competitively priced fixed-gear bicycles to suit any budget.

  1. Customizable City Cruiser

    State Bicycle Co. – Rigby

Navy blue fixie with retro design, lightweight steel frame, leather seat, perfect for urban commuting.

  2. Hybrid Hippy Cruiser

Sole Bicycles – The Whaler II

Californian style bike, hybrid functionality, with brakes, drink holder, and flip-flop hub.

  3. Quality City Cruiser

    6KU Shelby 4

High-tensile steel frame, comfortable geometry, rear/front brakes, perfect for city living.

  4. Striking Modern Design

Fabricbike White & Black Single Speed

Black and white fixie, modern design, low price, fixed gear/freewheel sprocket for customizable riding style.

  5. Retro Convenience Cruiser

State Bicycle Co. – The Elliston Deluxe

Retro fixie with front/rear racks, brakes, and gears option. Convenient for commuters with agile handling.

  6. Budget Lightweight Cruiser

    Elops Single Speed 500

Cheapest fixie, available in 3 colors, lightweight and agile, fast, stable with good pedals and narrow handlebars.

How Expensive Are Fixed-Gear Bikes?

Fixed-gear bikes range from extremely expensive, high-end models (these can cost several thousand dollars) to cheaper, budget models and even cheaper, second-hand fixies. That said, the average price of a fixed-gear bike is around $350.

Of course, you get what you pay for. A basic fixed-gear bike should be cheap, but as you climb through the price brackets you gain additional features and more tech. This might include app functionality and coverage like theft insurance. Specific types of fixies are also more expensive. For example, the average price of a track fixie is around $600 and the price of a fixed-gear mountain bike is closer to $1000.

Many cyclists, though, simply prefer cheaper fixed-gear bicycles because they’re truer to the fixie lifestyle of minimalism and simplicity. Unless you want something specialised, there really isn’t any need to spend big on a fixed-gear bike. It’s also worth noting that fixed-gear bicycles are much cheaper to maintain than standard road bikes.

Why Are Fixies So Cheap?

Fixies are so cheap because they contain fewer parts than other bicycles! Fixed-gear bikes don’t have freewheel mechanisms and many don’t have brakes. They’re scaled back elsewhere too, usually lacking front and rear racks.

You’ll often find that fixed-gear bike manufacturers make every effort to strip as many components from their bikes as possible – it sometimes feels as though you’re just buying a frame and wheels! Of course, this means drastically lower production costs and keeps the retail price of fixies substantially lower than other kinds of bikes.

Although you can buy more technologically advanced fixies, you’ll rarely see bikes that include things like GPS tracking, which push the price up. Fixed-gear bicycles have largely been immune to the slow march of technology, further increasing their retro appeal.

The focus on a beautiful aesthetic and minimalistic design makes fixies one of the cheapest types of bike that you’ll find anywhere. It’s also why they make such great starter bikes for people on a tight budget.

Best Fixie under £/$500

Let’s take a look at some of the best and cheapest fixies on the market.

1. State Bicycle Co. – Rigby

  • UK Flag £330
  • US Flag $399
  • EU Flag €399

Prices are approximate

Classic retro style.

No-tool assembly.

Choose fixed gear or freewheel.

Rigby absolutely nails the retro aesthetic that makes fixies so desirable. With its navy blue frame, leather seat and creme trim, this bike certainly fits the bill. Much more than just looks, though, the State Bicycle features a tough steel frame that’s also lightweight and extremely agile. It’s the perfect choice for zipping through commuter traffic on a budget. The build is fully customisable, too.

Pros

  • Vintage looks.
  • Fixed gear or freewheel.
  • Quality steel frame.

Cons

  • Not track ready.
  • Assembly instructions can be confusing.
  • Standard saddle isn’t the comfiest.

2. Sole Bicycles – The Whaler II

  • UK Flag £330
  • US Flag $399
  • EU Flag €399

Prices are approximate

Sleek, more modern design.

Extremely lightweight.

Streamlined saddle.

The Whaler II brings with it true Californian, hippy vibes. Its styling mixes old and new, and its functionality does too. Not a true fixie in the purest sense, this bike comes with front and rear brakes (something that we appreciated!). There’s also an eyelet to store a drink on the move and the flip-flop hub allows riders to easily switch between single-speed and fixed gear.

Pros

  • Built for speed.
  • Lots of frame sizes.
  • Water bottle holder.

Cons

  • Not designed for offroading.
  • Not suited to the track.
  • Only 30 days warranty.

3. 6KU Shelby 4

  • UK Flag £409
  • US Flag $500
  • EU Flag €500

Prices are approximate

Free shipping.

Synthetic leather saddle.

More comfortable riding position.

It’s not the cheapest on the list, but the Shelby 4 still represents excellent value for money because it’s such a quality bike. A slightly tweaked frame geometry offers a more comfortable sitting position and gives the bike its elegant look. It comes with rear/front brakes and the frame is crafted from high-tensile steel. Designed for city living, this fixie is perfect for commuters.

Pros

  • Has front/back brakes.
  • Designed for the city.
  • Comfortable riding position.

Cons

  • Only three sizes.
  • On the expensive side.
  • More complex assembly.

4. Fabricbike White & Black Single Speed

  • UK Flag £350
  • US Flag $425
  • EU Flag €425

Prices are approximate

Handlebar and strap customisable.

Unique design.

Customisable build.

With its stark black and white looks, the Fabricbike is one of the most striking fixies that you’ll see and also one of the most modern looking. With its low price, it makes an ideal entry point into the world of cycling and is nicely customisable. A fixed gear cog and freewheel sprocket mean that you can opt for a riding style of your choice.

Pros

  • Front and rear brakes.
  • Flip-flop rear wheel.
  • Steel frame.

Cons

  • Not one for “purists.”
  • Designed only for urban cycling.
  • Lacks the fixie retro aesthetic.

5. State Bicycle Co. – The Elliston Deluxe

  • UK Flag £480
  • US Flag $580
  • EU Flag €580

Prices are approximate

Coaster brake included.

More features than standard fixie.

High build quality.

The Ellison is the bike to go for if you like your fixies a little less minimalistic. It comes with front and rear racks, brakes and the option for gears. This, of course, all means more weight, but it’s undoubtedly more convenient than a totally stripped-back, basic model. Despite these embellishments, it preserves the beloved spirit of the fixie with retro stylings and agile handling.

Pros

  • Premium frame.
  • Front and back racks.
  • Unique stylings.

Cons

  • One of the more expensive.
  • Rigid suspension.
  • Quite heavy.

Best Fixie under £/$300

6. Elops Single Speed 500

  • UK Flag £250
  • US Flag $299
  • EU Flag €270

Prices are approximate

Excellent budget option.

Lightweight and stable.

Streamlined for speed.

This is the cheapest fixie on the list and it’s the perfect budget bike! Available in three colours, it’s extremely lightweight, which means that it also ranks highly for agility – perfect for urban living. The Elops is fast too and will give you a genuinely exhilarating ride if you want one. Stability is also excellent with good, grippy pedals and narrow handlebars for directional control.

Pros

  • Low price.
  • Flip-flop hub.
  • Very agile.

Cons

  • Basic design.
  • No customisation options.
  • Only three sizes.

Do Brompton Bikes Ever Go on Sale? https://discerningcyclist.com/brompton-bike-sales/ Mon, 05 Dec 2022 10:00:00 +0000 https://discerningcyclist.com/?p=20848

The post Do Brompton Bikes Ever Go on Sale? appeared first on Discerning Cyclist.

]]>

The Short Answer

Brompton bikes rarely go on sale due to their high demand and value. However, discounts can sometimes be found during events like Black Friday or on older models. Discount codes and ex-display models can also offer cheaper options. Additionally, exploring cycling schemes or purchasing from third-party showrooms can provide opportunities to get a Brompton bike at a lower price.

Brompton bikes are some of the most popular bikes on the market, featuring virtually unparalleled build quality, a smooth ride and advanced tech. Unfortunately, all of that comes with a high cost: Bromptons are expensive.

That leads many cyclists to wonder whether they can grab a Brompton bike on sale at a more palatable price. Bromptons tend to hold their value very well (another reason that they’re so expensive), which makes it more difficult to find a discount.

Don’t lose hope, though, because smart shoppers can still sometimes find these bikes on sale.

Brompton Bike Sales?

Brompton very rarely discounts its bikes because it doesn’t need to. The popularity of these machines means that they fly off the shelves. However, you will occasionally see discounts for events like Black Friday, and these can sometimes be substantial.

You are, of course, much more likely to secure a discount on older models, especially just after a new Brompton bike has been released. Like all companies, Brompton phases out older models, lowering the price as it does so.

Purchasing a discounted older model is a fantastic entry point into the Brompton family. You can even look at close-match Brompton alternatives that offer much the same functionality for a lower price.

SOURCE: Brompton.com

Discounted Brompton Bikes

Discounted Brompton Bikes are hard to come by, but you can find discount codes online to test on the Brompton website (if you’re buying online). These usually promise discounts from around 10% to 20%, although not every code will work.

Retailers who stock Bromptons, like Evans Cycles, Halfords and Mike’s Bikes, can occassional have sales that include Bromptons, so these are always worth keeping an eye out for.

A quick google search for these discount codes will turn up hundreds of results, many of them old and no longer active. Look for the most recent, and then it might take a little trial and error. Try the code at checkout to see if it works, or install one of the many browser apps like Honey that do all the hard work for you.

Up-to-date codes are rare, but they do exist, and that’s how many people manage to secure a discounted Brompton.

Where to Buy Cheap Brompton Bikes

The best place to buy a cheap Brompton bike is from Brompton itself using one of the above methods and looking either for a live discount code or a discounted older model. Alternatively, buying through a third-party showroom can also be successful.

Ex-display models usually sell at significantly discounted prices. These bikes haven’t been used or ridden, but they have been on display in the showroom, which means that they’re not classifiable as “brand new.” Nearly all bike stores offer discounts on display models, so if you want to buy your Brompton folding bike from the high street this is a good option.

It’s always worth looking into cycling schemes, too. Many countries and localities offer discounts on bicycle purchases in an attempt to get cars off the road. In the UK, for example, Cyclescheme promised 25% – 39% off bike and bike accessory purchases.

Schemes like these are common and are another great way to knock down the price of a Brompton without having to wait for the company to offer discounts.

The post TILT 100 vs 120 vs 500 vs 900: Which Decathlon Folding Bike is Best? appeared first on Discerning Cyclist.

]]>

The Short Answer

Decathlon offers a range of folding bikes, including the BTWIN TILT series. The TILT 100 is the basic model, while the TILT 120, TILT 500, and TILT 900 offer more features. They provide affordable options for cyclists on a budget compared to Brompton’s higher-priced folding bikes.

Decathlon, with its extensive online store and 2000 physical stores across 56 countries, is known for being a great place to find entry-level bikes at very good prices.

If you’re looking to purchase a folding bike, but don’t have hundreds, or even thousands, of pounds to spend on a Brompton, then Decathlon might just be the perfect place to start.

Folding bikes can be very expensive, but there are plenty of cheaper alternatives on the market. In this guide, we’ll take you through the TILT folding bikes at Decathlon, which starting at just under £200, are a much more wallet-friendly alternative to even the cheapest Brompton folding bike – but still have all of the portability and functionality you need.

BTWIN Folding Bikes

  1. Decathlon’s cheapest folding bike

    BTWIN 100 Tilt Folding Bike

A practical, simple bike that’s ideal for cycling on flat terrain in urban areas.

  2. Budget 6-Speed Folding Bike

    BTWIN 120 Tilt Folding Bike

The Tilt 120 can be easily stored in the boot of a car.

  3. Mid-range 7-Speed Bike

    BTWIN 500 Tilt Folding Bike

The Tilt 500 folds up for easy transport in a car, train or bus.

  4. Decathlon’s best folding bike

    BTWIN 900 Tilt Folding Bike

The nine speeds, lightweight aluminium frame and ergonomic handles make this bike both practical and comfortable.

  5. Electric Folding Bike

BTWIN 500E Tilt Folding Electric Bike

The Tilt 500 E electric bike can be folded to fit in a car boot.

Brompton vs Decathlon Folding Bikes

The major difference between Brompton and Decathlon folding bikes are their prices. Brompton’s models start at the A-Line, which is priced from £850, and goes all the way up to the T-Line which starts at £3,750.

Brompton is renowned for its excellent quality folding bikes and folding e-bikes, and is the market leader in the field. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t get a really solid folding bike from a brand like Decathlon, which caters to a lower price point.

Like Brompton, Decathlon stocks several different models of folding bike, and we’ll go into detail on each throughout this guide. The range starts with the BTWIN TILT 100, which is the basic model and costs just under £200, and goes up to the BTWIN TILT 900, coming in at just under £500.

Decathlon’s bikes come in heavier than Brompton’s, with the 100 model weighing 13.3kg, while the A-Line weighs just 11.6kg. Overall the bikes can be quite different to Brompton’s offerings, from components to materials, but fundamentally they’re practical folding bikes, which cater to a completely different part of the market to Brompton’s pricier alternatives.

The TILT models are stylish and sturdy, quick to unfold and easy to store, which make them a great folding bike brand option for cyclists working with a smaller budget.

Decathlon has five different models of folding bike, as listed above.

The 100 model is at the low end, priced at £199.99, a simple model which is perfect for flat, urban terrain, while the next model up, the 120, jumps to £249.99 and is built to handle a wider variety of terrain.

The 500 is £349.99 and is designed for both weekday commutes and weekend adventures. It also comes as an e-bike, the 500E (£799.99).

Finally, the 900 is the top-end model, costing £499.99 and boasting nine speeds, a lightweight aluminium frame and rigid structure which will take you wherever you want to go.

Whether one of these models has already captured your attention, or you’re torn between several, this guide will help you find the perfect Decathlon folding bike for your needs.

As you read through this guide, do note that the bikes sometimes have different names in different regions — for example, the US market uses the name ‘Tilt’, while sometimes in the UK market the bikes are just called BTWIN.

1. BTWIN 100 Tilt Folding Bike

  • UK Flag £200
  • US Flag $299
  • EU Flag €215

Prices are approximate

  • Weight: 13.3 kg
  • Wheel Size: 20″
  • Folded Size: 78 x 66 x 41 cm
  • Gears: 1-Speed

Single-speed folding bike

Designed for flat, urban terrain

The BTWIN 100 Tilt is the range’s entry-level folding bike. It’s at the low end of the price range, uses cheaper materials, and offers less functionality than some of the pricier models.

However, that doesn’t mean that this isn’t a great bike in itself. At £199.99, it certainly is a bargain, and could be a great choice for someone who wants to see if a folding bike is right for them and their lifestyle before committing to a more expensive model.

The BTWIN 100 Tilt is a single-speed folding bike designed for flat, urban terrain, and can be folded down in just 30 seconds for easy stowing in cars, on public transport, or at the office. It weighs 13.3kg, so is not the lightest folding bike on the market, but is still easy enough to carry and lift when needed.

It has a steel frame and fork, chosen for durability, and Decathlon offers a lifetime warranty on the frame, stem (excl. hinge), rigid fork, and handlebar. Its 20-inch wheels come with a wheel restraint system for easy carrying and storage, and the gumwall city tyres have been developed to provide the best compromise between performance and grip.

Overall, this is a decent, sturdy bike. It won’t blow your socks off, but could be a great place to start for folding bike newbies.

Pros

  • Can be folded down in just 30 seconds
  • Sturdy bike

Cons

  • Basic functionality
  • No fenders
  • On the heavier side

2. BTWIN 120 Tilt Folding Bike

  • UK Flag £250
  • US Flag $349
  • EU Flag €299

Prices are approximate

  • Weight: 14.5 kg
  • Wheel Size: 20″
  • Folded Size: 78 x 66 x 36 cm
  • Gears: 6-Speed

Folds up for easy transport

Can be easily stored in the boot of a car.

Next up in the range is the BTWIN 120 Tilt, which is a decent upgrade from the entry-level model, and only slightly more expensive at £249.99.

This 6-speed bike comes with mudguards, and is designed for a wider range of adventures than the 100 model. However, it has the same steel frame, fork and V-brakes as its cheaper counterpart. Gears are changed with a grip shifter, and the steel-low rise handlebars can be adjusted to suit your body.

While the 100 model has non-folding pedals, the 120’s pedals can be folded flat so your bike can be stored against a wall and take up very little space at just 26cm wide when folded.

Again, there’s a lifetime warranty on the frame, stem (excl. hinge), rigid fork and handlebar, indicating that this is a reliable, sturdy folding bike.

The 120 Tilt, despite being just £50 more expensive than the entry-level model, packs a lot more punch than the 100, making this an even better option for new folding bike riders.

Pros

  • Pedals can be folded flat so your bike can be stored against a wall

Cons

  • Heavy for a folding bike (14.5kg)

BTWIN Tilt 100 vs 120

Don’t be fooled by the mere £50 price difference — the BTWIN Tilt 120 is a substantially better bike than the 100.

They both have the same steel frame, fork and brakes, and the 120 is slightly heavier than the 100 at 14.5kg compared to 13.3kg. Both bikes can be folded in just 30 seconds.

However, the 100 is single-speed while the 120 has a six-speed gear system, making it more suitable for tackling different terrains. The 120’s pedals fold flat while the 100’s do not, so the 120 is a more compact model — something to bear in mind if you’re looking for a small folding bike.

Because of its versatility, more compact size, and despite its extra 1.2kg of weight, if you’ve got an extra £50 to spare, the BTWIN Tilt 120 is surely the better option for a folding bike with better functionality.

3. BTWIN 500 Tilt Folding Bike

  • UK Flag £350
  • US Flag $449
  • EU Flag €400

Prices are approximate

  • Weight: 12.9 kg
  • Wheel Size: 20″
  • Folded Size: 78 x 66 x 44 cm
  • Gears: 7-Speed

Great for both weekday commutes and weekend rides.

Folds up for easy transport

With a price tag of £349.99, the 7-speed Tilt 500 is the next step up in terms of quality and functionality. It’s suitable for both weekday commutes and weekend leisure rides, and its compact design and light weight of just 12.9kg makes it easy to carry and store where necessary.

The Tilt 500 takes just 15 seconds to unfold, so it couldn’t be easier to switch from pedestrian to cyclist.

The frame is made of aluminium for the perfect combination of reliable sturdiness and light weight, while the steel fork offers durability. Like other models in the Tilt range, the folding bike has a lifetime warranty on the frame, stem (excl. hinge), rigid fork and handlebar.

Its 20-inch wheels have anti-puncture tyres, and the pedals fold up with the bike for reduced bulk. Plus, it’s equipped with a stand, mudguard with stays, and a double chainguard to prevent chain slipping and protect from dirt, so you can rely on the Tilt 500 whether you’re on urban roads or more rural paths.

Pros

  • Takes just 15 seconds to unfold
  • Double chainguard to prevent chain slipping
  • Great vaue

Cons

  • No standout cons considering the price tag!

BTWIN Tilt 120 vs 500

The BTWIN Tilt 500 is a step up from the 120 model, with a lighter weight, aluminium frame as opposed to steel on the 120, a quicker folding/unfolding time and an extra speed to play with.

The 500 comes with a double chainguard and mudguard, so is well-protected from dirt, and has anti-puncture tyres. The 120, on the other hand, does not come equipped with any of these components.

The 500 comes in four colours compared to the 120’s two, though the design itself is almost identical.

Whether it’s worth an extra £100 for these extra features is up to you — both bikes are an excellent starting point for those curious about folding bikes.

4. BTWIN 900 Tilt Folding Bike

  • UK Flag £500
  • US Flag $499
  • EU Flag €405

Prices are approximate

  • Weight: 12.2 kg
  • Wheel Size: 20″
  • Folded Size: 78 x 66 x 44 cm
  • Gears: 9-Speed

Easy to store

Lightweight aluminium frame and ergonomic handles

The BTWIN 900 sits at the top of the folding bike range, boasting nine speeds, a lightweight aluminium frame and fork, ergonomic handles, memory foam saddle and a mere 15 second unfolding time.

Again, there’s a lifetime warranty on the frame, stem (excl. hinge), rigid fork and handlebar, and the tyres have anti-puncture reinforcement and reflective strips for visibility on those dark winter commutes.

The Shimano Sora 9-speed drivetrain is reliable and precise, perfect for tackling a range of terrains, while the mudguard and double chainguard protect the bike from dirt. Plus, all colour variants of this model include a rear derailleur guard.

At 12.2kg, the Tilt 900 is the lightest model of the range, making the bike inherently portable and easy to store. It is currently only available in one colour, ochre, with stylish tan handlebars and memory foam saddle.

It’s certainly the most premium of the range, which you might expect given its £499.99 price tag, making it a worthy investment for those looking for a high-end folding bike, at a relatively low price compared to other brands on the market.

Pros

  • 15 second unfolding time.
  • Double chainguard protect the bike from dirt

Cons

  • Currently available only in one colour.

BTWIN Tilt 500 vs 900

Aside from a few key differences, the Tilt 500 and 900 are very similar folding bikes.

They both have an aluminium frame, but the 500 has steel forks while the 900’s are aluminium.

The 500 has seven speeds while the 900 boasts 9, and both come with a mudguard and chainguard. The 900, however, also has a rear derailleur guard, so might be a better choice if you regularly ride down dirty paths.

Both bikes also have anti-puncture tyres, fold-up pedals and seamless rain-proof saddles, but the 900’s saddle is made of memory foam while the 500’s is just regular foam.

Both have a 15-second unfolding time, and the 900 is slightly lighter at 12.2kg compared to the 500’s 12.9kg.

In terms of aesthetics, the 500 comes in four colours while the 900 is only available in ochre, which is something to consider if you’re particular about the look of your folding bike.

5. BTWIN 500E Tilt Folding Bike

  • UK Flag £700
  • EU Flag €800

Prices are approximate

  • Weight: 18.6 kg
  • Wheel Size: 20″
  • Folded Size: 83 x 67 x 45 cm
  • Gears: 6-Speed

Can be folded to fit in a car boot

Suited for both commuting and longer journeys.

For longer commutes, an electric folding bike can be invaluable. The BTWIN 500E can be folded in 15 seconds for easy transportation and storage, and its six speeds combined with electric assistance makes commuting simpler than ever.

As you might expect, this electric model is heavier than the regular folding bikes in the Tilt range at 18.6kg including battery and motor. It has a range of up to 35km and 26Nm of torque, so if you have a long commute with some tiring inclines, the e-bike could really help you out.

The 500E has an aluminium frame with built-in battery which can be charged directly through the frame or can be removed for charging at home or in the office.

The aluminium V-Brake callipers offer powerful braking, and the tyres come with anti-puncture reinforcement. The motor is built onto the rear wheel for improved steering control.

The e-bike comes in two colours, turquoise blue or black, so you can choose your ideal folding bike style.

At £799.99, the 500E is much more expensive than the regular folding bikes in the range, but compared to other folding e-bikes on the market it’s a much more wallet-friendly option.

Pros

  • Can be folded in 15 seconds for easy transportation and storage.
  • Comes with anti-puncture reinforcement.

Cons

  • Considerably heavier than non-electric folding bikes

Should I Buy an E-Bike?

There’s plenty to love about electric bikes.

First of all, they help you to go further and faster than on a regular bike thanks to the nifty little motor, which takes the strain out of cycling and gives you a boost whenever you need it, whether that’s jetting off from a red light or heaving yourself up a hill.

Statistics show that people who have an e-bike cycle more are great for getting you in the saddle more often if that’s your goal.

Plus, they can save you money, are great for commuting, and are even safer than regular bikes in many ways.

willier filante hybrid e-bike outdoors

The Cost Benefit of Buying an E-Bike

Maintaining an e-bike typically costs about the same as maintenance for a regular bike. Most components are generic between regular bikes and e-bikes, and of course, keeping it clean, making sure the tires are inflated, the chain and cables are lubed, and the battery is adequately charged will help maintain lifespan in the long run.

You should also consider the potential long-term savings. Yes, the initial cost of an e-bike is rather high, but if you use it more to get around to your day-to-day activities, you’ll save money on fuel and public transport.

If you cycle for exercise, you could save money on a gym membership by investing in a bike you actually want to ride.

Plus, there’s no need to worry about the cost of charging your e-bike: on average, it will cost between £0.20 to £0.40 per charge. Considering many e-bikes can get you as far as 80km on a single charge – often a whole week of commuting – this cost is negligible.

Choosing the Right E-Bike

When you’ve made the decision to buy an electric bike, next comes the fun part: bike shopping.

With so many different e-bikes on the market, it can be tricky to decide which one is right for you.

Budget will, of course, play a huge role in the decision-making process, but as with any investment, it’s generally not a good idea to skimp out on a cheaper model that might need replacing in a few years. Instead, shop around for an e-bike that’s going to offer the most long-term value, including quality components, good battery range, and durability, rather than going for the cheapest option in the short term.

It’s also important to consider your lifestyle and what you’re going to use the bike for. Will you be commuting in a city, and therefore need a nifty urban road bike? Will you be going off-road, and need a sturdier ride or even a fat bike? Do you need to be mindful of storage and consider investing in a folding e-bike? Or do you want a bike that you can ride to work on during the week, and then use to explore the countryside on weekends?

There’s an e-bike for all of these types of rider and more, so it’s worth sitting down and thinking about what you’ll use the bike for before you part with your cash.

Factors like design, style, and functionality will also play a role – no one wants to ride an ugly bike – so don’t be ashamed to take into account the look, feel, colour and design of e-bikes when you’re shopping.

How to Extend the Life of an Electric Bike (5 Tips)

While the lifespan of e-bikes may be influenced by certain factors, you can play an active role in prolonging their longevity. An e-bike requires a serious financial investment for most people, but they are definitely worthwhile if you take care of them.

By following these tips, you can enjoy a prolonged and sustainable e-bike experience while reducing the overall environmental impact.

1. Proper Battery Care

Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for charging and storage to maximize the lifespan of your e-bike battery. This usually means avoiding exposure to extreme temperature, but also regularly fully charging and using the battery and avoiding frequent complete drainage.

Generally, if you can, you should remove the battery when not in use, keeping it somewhere dry and safe. This isn’t just good for the battery, but can also protect you against theft!

2. Regular Maintenance

Schedule routine inspections with a professional to ensure that all components of your e-bike are in good working order. Regular tune-ups can identify and address any potential issues before they become major problems.

Electric bikes are just like regular bikes in this regard. Even if you can’t maintain the electrical aspects yourself, that doesn’t give you an excuse to neglect the health of the rest of the bike!

3. Keep It Clean

Clean your e-bike regularly, removing any dirt, grime, or debris that may accumulate. This simple act not only improves the appearance of your e-bike but also prevents potential damage caused by debris accumulation.

Cleaning your e-bike, as well as maintaining it, can give it a new lease of life. It’s also likely that if it looks newer, it will feel a little newer, and you’re likely to appreciate and value it more.

4. Appropriate Riding

While e-bikes are designed to handle various terrains, it’s essential to ride within the recommended limits. Avoid excessive strain on the motor or battery by adjusting your riding style based on the conditions.

It’s also key that you use your e-bike for the intended purposes. Obviously, most step-through city e-commuters probably aren’t going to handle off-road trails or MTB courses. Purchase an e-bike that’s suitable for its intended use.

5. Store It Well

When storing your e-bike, choose a secure and dry location. Protect it from extreme weather conditions and if possible, store it with the battery at a moderate charge level to maintain its longevity.

As with regular bikes, exposure to the elements is a major factor in the lifespan of an e-bike. Keep it inside whenever possible, treat any rust, and show some care. After all, it’s likely that you invested a good amount of money it.

Why is VanMoof So Popular?

VanMoof bikes are popular because they offer an array of cutting-edge technology, supreme ride quality, short charge times, lightweight frames, low maintenance and unparalleled customer support. Many people simply consider these bikes the pinnacle of urban e-cycling.

Although VanMoof’s bikes are undoubtedly high end, e-bike technology is advancing quickly and they’re far from the only quality bikes available. It’s perfectly possible to find a more budget friendly alternative to the classic VanMoof and still enjoy a phenomenal ride.

VanMoof Cost

The cost of VanMoof bikes differs between models, but it’s the major factor that puts most people off buying one. Here’s a breakdown of the core models and associated costs.

VanMoof’s current range costs of the premium S5 and their budget S4, which offers a similar feature setup for over $1,000 cheaper.

MODELPRICE
S4/X4$2,498
S5/A5$3,998

Why is VanMoof So Expensive?

With VanMoof bikes you get what you pay for. These bikes feature high-end technology including built-in GPS, quick charging, Bluetooth and a formidable range. Design features like the lightweight frame and build quality also come at a premium.

These bikes are expensive because they’re considered long term investments. Older models can go out of date quickly in the fast moving e-bike market, but the amount of technology loaded into a VanMoof makes them somewhat “future proof.” In essence, they’re built and priced to last.

Two years ago I had my first ever bike stolen. But, as I explained at the time, it was my fault. In short, during a hasty locking of my bike, I simply attached my lock around the lamppost, but not my bike frame – which, as it turns out, is pretty important if you don’t want someone to walk off with your bike.

The next day, I decided I needed to find the best cheap bike I could find. So, I went to Decathlon: the home of cheap bikes.

I’d love to buy a fancy shiny bike with all the bells and whistles, but the truth is: I don’t trust myself to take care of it. My bike maintenance skills are close to zero and even if the bike evades the slow death caused my little upkeep, there’s also the matter of me not being able to lock up a bicycle.

After some potential deliberations about possibly getting a gravel bike, I opted for my typical bicycle of choice: a hybrid bike.

Living in Spain, I like a bike that can handle dodgy roads, so front suspension is very welcome.

So, after some research, I settled on the cheap and cheerful BTWIN Riverside 500 Bike from Decathlon, which is available for around the £/€/$300 mark.

I don’t know why, but despite owning this bike for two years, I’d never actually gotten round to writing a review on it. So, here is my two-year review of the Riverside 500…

Summary

The BTWIN Riverside 500 bike is a versatile and comfortable hybrid bike, suitable for both leisure and urban riding. It features a lightweight aluminum frame, front suspension, 21-speed Shimano gears, and ergonomic grips and saddle.

Pros

  • Great value
  • Thumb shifter
  • Responsive disc brakes

Cons

  • Frame fades and scratches

BTWIN Riverside 500 Review

I’ve always been partial to owning a cheap bike. Sometimes through necessity (i.e. being a broke student), but I also like not having to worry about my bike too much. If something happens to it, I’ll get a new one with not too much stress.

Over the past year, I’ve experienced the flipside of this by owning a somewhat expensive electric fat bike. That bike I have to be much more considerate about when and where I leave it, as it is an eye-catching bike that thieves will definitely be keen on stealing if given half a chance.

So why did I choose the Riverside 500?

Well, first off, I thought it looked cool. Hybrid bikes can sometimes look a bit clumsy, but with a squared frame shape with a slight drop in the top bar plus some really nice colour options (I went for the blue/orange combo), it looked nice.

In the past I’ve got some bikes with all the bells and whistles for commuters (i.e. dynamo lights, pannier racks and the like), but this time I wanted something a little bit simpler and lighter.

Decathlon’s Best Hybrid Bike?

For a hybrid bike that comes in well under £/$500, the Decathlon’s Riverside 500 is impressively light, weighing in at 14.1kg – which is definitely the perk of not adding too many features to the bike, plus an aluminium frame.

Indeed, the Riverside features solid reactive disc brakes, front suspension and is a 9-speed bike with a thumb shifter which makes switching through gears very easy.

I also find this bike very comfortable to ride. This is aided by the bike’s suspension, but also by Decathlon’s ergonomic saddle.

Admittedly, I don’t ride this bike for long rides. That’s mostly because it’s exceedingly rare for me to ride more than 10km in general. 90% of my rides are a 3.5km (hilly) commute to my office in town. As well as the hills, there are several hefty speed bumps on my route, so the front suspension certainly helps in this regard.

A Budget Hybrid Bike for Commuting

Indeed, after two years of riding this bike nearly every day, I’m still happy with the purchase. I’ve gotten a bit better at bike maintenance over that time too, so it’s stay in condition. I’m still using the same disk brakes, even the same tyres as when I bought it. The only thing that’s aged in the colour of the bike frame somewhat, which has faded quite a bit after being left in the Spanish sun for many hours. It’s also worth noting that the frame does scratch quite easily, as you can see in the picture below.

But in terms of a cheap commuter bike, it’s great. I’ve even tried it out as a “mountain bike” with friends and managed to, for the most part, keep up with them on the tracks, even despite having significantly narrower tyres than them.

Decathlon’s Riverside 500 Bike Review Summary

All-in-all, this a great value budget hybrid bike. If you’ve got a relatively short commute (under 10km or so) with some hills and bumps, I can attest to the fact that it will be a dependable companion. It’s a sturdy hybrid bike available at a fantastic price.

Two years after buying it, I still stand behind the fact that the Riverside 500 is best budget hybrid bikes for commuting, with the bike available for around $550/£350.

folding e-bikes under 1000

Electric folding bikes, or folding e-bikes to give them another name, are a very popular option for cycling in cities, especially for commuters who also use public transport to get to work.

That said, folding e-bikes are also helpful for RV owners and adventurers – anyone who likes to get outdoors but is short for space for that matter.

But like many electric bikes these days, they can cost a fortune. That’s why we’re here to point you toward seven of the best folding e-bikes priced under $1000. Can you even buy something for under $500? Read on and find out.

Best Folding Electric Bikes under $1000

So, which is the best budget folding electric bike? We haven’t been able to distill it into just one, so here are 7 of the best, all under $1000.

  1. fiido d4s folding e-bike

    Neat city runabout

    Fiido D4S

With its 20″ wheels, slim tires and disc brakes this is a folding e-bike perfect for urban riding and living.

  2. lectric xp 3.0 e-bike

    E-bike with fat tires

    Lectric XP 3.0

The first e-bike on our list with fat tires. The model is a popular bike of Lectric’s and has been through a number of revisions.

  3. btwin 20 inch folding e-bike

    Low range, but feature packed

    BTWIN 20″ Folding Electric Bike

Another folding e-bike that would suit a commuter down to the ground. Whilst the range isn’t great, the mudguards and lights are a welcome touch.

  4. mycle compact folding e-bike

    Weighs under 40lbs

    Mycle Compact

Mycycle’s compact looks great and should perform well too. Fitted with guards, pannier rack and lights its ready to take on the daily commute.

  5. ecotric cheetah folding e-bike

    500W motor

    Ecotric Cheetah

This folding e-bike features both throttle and pedal assist mode. A powerful 500W motor gets you over steep hills or aids pedalling when weighed down with baggage.

  6. heybike mars folding e-bike

    All terrain folding e-bike

    Heybike Mars

With a max load of 330lbs the Mars is an e-bike that can handle serious loads and because it folds, it stores much easier than full-sized e-bikes.

  7. ado a20 plus folding e-bike

    Standout looks

    ADO A20+

Thanks to three different riding modes this folding e-bike can get you places fast, or provide a gentle push when time is less of the essence.

bEST BUDGET E-BIKE: fiido

Folding E-Bike Cost

How much do folding e-bikes cost? Well, how long is a piece of string?

Arguably, Brompton – yes, those guys again – make the best folding electric bike around. The design cleverly uses the front carrier block to mount the battery and other electrical gubbins – a space that is usually reserved for a bag on standard, non-electric Brompton.

If this all sounds too good to be true, well, it is to some extent. An electric Brompton folding bike can easily set you back $3800 or £3000.

Other brands tend to focus their folding electric bikes on specific features like making them as light as possible, as powerful as possible, or even as small as possible (when folded).

That said it’s still possible to come by a cheap folding electric bike – just don’t expect too much from it. It certainly won’t be one of the lightest folding electric bikes on the market nor one with the longest range between charges.

Folding e-bikes with fat tires are particularly in vogue at the moment, but given their sheer size and bulk, there don’t tend to be many priced below our $1000 ceiling.

Best Budget Folding Electric Bike: Top 7

1. Fiido D4S

fiido d4s folding e-bike blue
fiido d4s folding e-bike colours
  • UK Flag £492
  • US Flag $599
  • EU Flag €569

Prices are approximate

  • Folded Size: 850cm x 450cm x 40cm.
  • Weight: 40.5lbs. (18.5kg)
  • Range: 50 miles.
  • Gearing: 5-Speed.
  • Brakes: Disc brakes.

375Wh battery for decent range.

250W motor.

Folds small.

Although fairly simple, this folding electric bike ticks many of our boxes – especially when it comes to something designed for use on the pavement in towns and cities.

The really great thing about the D4S is that it’s been fitted with a decent-sized battery – one that if stored, charged and used correctly could achieve 50 miles of range before it needs recharging. That may well be enough for a whole week’s worth of commuting!

Pros

  • Usually priced much cheaper.
  • Plenty of positive customer reviews.
  • Fits riders from 5′ to 6′ plus.

Cons

  • 250W motor won’t be powerful enough for some.
  • No mudguards.

2. Lectric XP 3.0

7-Speed gears.

Now on its third revision (hence the 3.0 name), the XP is a really versatile folding electric bike that would suit a variety of different bike riders.

City dwellers who haven’t ridden a bike in a while will appreciate the reassuring handling and comfort provided by the 3″ tires. Those who prefer to ride out in the country will enjoy the fact that those very same tires (and front suspension fork) will soak up the bumps and see them through the mud off-road.

Pros

  • Hydraulic disc brakes.
  • Rear rack can hold 150lbs.

Cons

  • $999 is an on-sale price.
  • US only.

3. BTWIN 20″ Folding Electric Bike

Great for the odd trip.

Fits most riders.

If you aren’t too picky and you are after a simple e-bike then perhaps this option from BTWIN could deserve your attention.

Whilst it doesn’t have the most powerful motor, nor the longest of ranges, its adaptability means it could probably be used by a few members of the family or even as a pool bike at work.

Pros

  • BTWIN are well regarded.

Cons

  • Not on sale in the US currently.
  • Small range.
  • Low torque motor.
  • Max 100kg weight.

  • Gearing: 7-Speed.
  • Range: 18 miles.
  • Brakes: Disc brakes.

Lightest e-bike on our list.

Looks the business.

Neat battery integration.

Arguably the best-looking folding electric bike on our list, the Compact from Mycle has a design that belies its price.

With a battery neatly tucked away in the bike’s seatpost, you’d be hard-pressed to realise that this was an electric bike.

Unfortunately, there are some drawbacks, namely a low range and mechanical disc brakes (not hydraulic) but there’s plenty to like about the Compact.

Pros

  • Low weight.
  • Neat battery integration.
  • Gutsy motor.

Cons

  • Not shipped to the US currently.
  • Only certain colours below £1000.
  • Low range.
  • Battery in seatpost poses some security questions.

5. Ecotric Cheetah

  • Gearing: 7-Speed.
  • Brakes: Disc brakes.

500W motor.

Pedal assist and throttle mode.

4″ wide tires.

Powered by a 500W motor, the Cheetah, like its animal namesake is ready to take the pace up a notch. Whether ridden in throttle or pedal assist mode this is a folding e-bike that’s a blast to ride, irrespective of the terrain or the surface.

If you can forgo the lights and pannier rack and you like the idea of an e-bike with fat tires then perhaps give this model a closer look.

Pros

  • Easily removable battery.
  • 4″ tires offer versatility.
  • Everyday great price.

Cons

  • 4″ tires might be sluggish on tarmac.
  • No pannier rack.
  • No lights.
  • Bulky looks.

6. Heybike Mars

  • Range: 48 miles.
  • Gearing: 5-Speed.
  • Brakes: Disc brakes.

500W motor.

Pedal assist and throttle mode.

48 mile range.

The last e-bike on our list to feature fat tires, the Mars is another model that could be used for a variety of different uses. Take it to the shops, take it to work, take it for work errands, take it on holiday – even take it fishing.

With the acceptable range, power and folding size, there isn’t much that holds this folding e-bike back.

Pros

  • Suspension fork.
  • Pannier rack.
  • Suspension fork.
  • Different colours.
  • Decent range.

Cons

  • Humdrum looks.

7. Ado A20+

  • US Flag $883
  • EU Flag €838

Prices are approximate

  • Weight: Not stated.
  • Range: 49 miles.
  • Gearing: 7-Speed.
  • Brakes: Disc brakes.

250W motor.

Pedal assist and throttle mode.

49 mile range.

Back to something more suited to towns and cities now and the last bike on our list is the ADO A20+.

This is a folding e-bike that clearly stands out thanks to its wheels with bladed spokes. Other than this, the bike is similar to other city e-folders on our list, other than the fact that it doesn’t come with a pannier rack as standard.

The bike features an easy-to-read display on which there is a port to charge your smartphone on the go.

Three different riding modes enable the rider to get the most out of the bike’s battery life, extend the riding range when needed or ampin up the power when time is running out.

Pros

  • Comes with phone holder.
  • Folding pedals.
  • Suspension seat post.

Cons

  • Not shipped to the US currently.
  • No pannier rack as standard.
