Love it or loathe it, Rapha is arguably the biggest clothing brand in cycling. 

What started as an antidote to the garish lycra of the early 2000s is now a major player in almost every sphere of cycling. From professional road cycling and bikepacking to commuting, mountain biking and cycling lifestyle, Rapha has a finger in every pie.

That’s by no means a criticism, merely a testament to their success. Although naysayers may disagree, in our book it’s fair to say that the brand has transcended the world of cycling and cycle sport and entered a space no other cycling apparel has been before.

So, how well do you know Rapha? Is your wardrobe rail stacked with offerings from the British brand? Even if it isn’t and you have a passing interest in Rapha, you might not have come across our 6 facts. Let’s have a look-see, shall we?

1. Rapha Was Founded in 2004

Think back to 2004. What were you up to? Spinning some tracks on your portable CD player? Watching Lance Armstrong storm to a sixth Tour de France victory? Perhaps logging in and sharing a status update on TheFacebook for the first time? Maybe you weren’t even born yet – god we’re old! But yes, Rapha has (at the time of writing) turned 20.

Simon Mottram, Rapha’s founder (he took a step back from running the company in 2023 – though he still maintains a seat on the Rapha board) should really be seen as a trailblazer.

As he has alluded to in many interviews over the years, he struggled to attract investment for Rapha in the early days. E-commerce was just in its infancy and no one in their right mind was starting what would be a men’s only direct-to-consumer offering. Then there was the cycling fashion of the time – all bright colours and garish logos.

Mottram managed to see the wood from the trees and get Rapha off the ground – chapeau! 

2. From 1 Jersey to Over 150 Different Products

In the heady days of the early noughties, Rapha hung its hat on one product—the Classic Jersey. Back then, it was called the Sportwool jersey, but the performance and design of today’s Rapha Classic Jersey aren’t a far cry from that first Rapha production run. 

The functionality (and quality) remains, as do the simple block colors and identifying asymmetric striped sleeves.

From humble beginnings, the Rapha catalog now includes over 150 different products—well, that’s how many we tallied up when we visited their website one evening. A staggering figure, really, when you think about it. From shoes to sunglasses, gloves to gilets, these days, there is far more to Rapha than plain cycling jerseys.

In their 20-year history, the number of releases, collections, collaborations, special editions, and limited runs must take the number of Rapha products into the thousands. 

While some bike riders say the quality of Rapha products has deteriorated over time, it’s not unusual for riders to be heading out in products that are nearly over 10 years old. Our 8-year-old Hardshell jacket is still going strong – well worth the £270 investment we’d say.

3. For the Past Six Years, Rapha Hasn’t Turned a Profit 

Yes, that’s right – for six whole years – over 2000 days of trading, Rapha hasn’t been able to squeeze a profit out of selling cycling clothing and accessories – that’s when retailing their bestselling classic jersey for £140/$170.

Whether you think that says more about today’s complex world of outsourced manufacturing, supply chains, pre-ordering, seasons, discounting, dropshipping—yadda, yadda, yadda—or you simply think it’s bad management, it’s certainly interesting to consider. 

With its marmite reputation amongst consumers and growth that went hand-in-hand with an increase in cycling popularity in the UK, Rapha has always remained excellent fodder for the general press and more run-of-the-mill cycling titles, so perhaps it’s a little unfair to criticize its financial performance. Indeed, not every company soars to over £130million worth of sales in under 20 years! 

In 2017, Rapha underwent a major change in ownership after a private equity company swooped in to buy the company for a cool £200 million. What followed was a splurge on making the Rapha business much more than an apparel brand—much more. The number of Rapha Clubhouses (dedicated shops selling Rapha) expanded rapidly, as did other parts of the business, including its dedicated cycling holidays.

All that admirable stuff being said, the most recent accounts released covering the year ending January 2023 stated that the holding company running Rapha ran up to a loss of £12 million – wowzers!

4. Palace, Brain Dead, Snow Peak: Collaborations Are Big Business at Rapha

Collaborations are big business in many industries today, and Rapha is no exception. Rapha has always looked beyond the cycling norm, and by partnering with other brands outside the straight-laced world of cycling, it has earned legions of new fans.

Skate brand, Palace, creative grouping Brain Dead, Japanese outdoor brand, Snow Peak – companies which you’d have bet your mortgage on having no link with cycling until Rapha came calling.

The success of these collaborations (sold-out collections sell for many times their RRP on websites like eBay) is another testament to the forward-thinking bods that have run over the years. Sponsorship of Team Sky and EF Pro Cycling (amongst other deals) have undoubtedly furthered Rapha’s appeal.

5. It Wasn’t Until 2021 that Rapha Produced Mountain Bike Clothing

Yikes, not until 2021! For 17 long years, Rapha held off those wearing baggy shorts and knee pads. 

Perhaps it was the mountain bikers who swore blind that they’d never be seen in anything with a Rapha logo on it, or it was simply Rapha who didn’t know their backside from their elbow when it came to manufacturing an MTB garment – who knows?

6. Working at Rapha Means Riding Your Bike Every Wednesday Morning

Rapha’s staff rides have become legendary in cycling industry circles. Whether it’s merely a ploy to attract top talent or a tangible piece of their ‘internal culture’ (someone pass us the HR sick bucket, please) it certainly gets our vote. More bike riding on any day of the week can only be a good thing for employers and employees.

In the world of cycling, there’s few things worse than a cold and miserable ride if you aren’t equipped for the task. Staying warm and comfortable in the winter months is essential, as it means more time out on the bike and less time with your frozen hands under the hot tap at home.

Whilst heated cycling gloves have had a surge in popularity in the past few years, they’re riddled with issues. They’re understandably an appealing choice, but there’s many other ways to ensure that you can keep your hands protected on those chillier days.

Cycling Gloves for Warm Hands

Let’s jump into why you shouldn’t buy heated cycling gloves, and why you should consider buying these 3 alternatives – which are quite frankly miles better – instead. We’ll also look at a few precautions you can take to make your cold rides more comfortable for your hands.

What Are Heated Cycling Gloves?

Heated cycling gloves are gloves that are equipped with built-in heating elements and are usually powered by rechargeable batteries. They aim to provide warmth to your hands during colder weather conditions by literally heating them.

They are available in various styles and designs, offering differing levels of insulation. They may also have a degree of waterproofing and touchscreen compatibility for convenience. 

They are, in theory, a convenient way to keep your hands toasty and prevent long term damage, however, in practice, they have many issues. 

Do Electric Heated Gloves Work?

Whilst electric heated gloves can offer some warmth and protection, they do unfortunately have several major drawbacks. They are usually expensive, some exceeding $200, the batteries require monitoring and replacement and, in extreme cold, could potentially prove to be dangerous.

Electric heated gloves have to balance warmth, dexterity, comfort and protectiveness, and inevitably have to compromise in at least one of those fields. They’re usually bulky to accommodate the batteries, resulting in reduced movement, and they’re very often inconsistent in terms of the coverage of hand-heating. 

Options such as the Sealskinz Heated Cycle Glove, for example, are a reasonably well made option, but they’re expensive, heavy and don’t keep your fingers warm. For over $200, one would hope for a little better.

Are Heated Cycling Gloves Worth It?

With all things considered, heated cycling gloves are generally not worth it. Whilst there are a few brands, such as Gerbing or Volt, producing reasonably good options, they are generally not a good investment for a number of reasons.

They’re bulky, heavy and uncomfortable because the gloves have to accommodate the battery which, at least currently, is too big.

What you may gain in warmth, you’re also likely to lose in dexterity and manoeuvrability. If you have to take off your gloves in order to use a key or remove a card from your wallet, they’re too bulky. 

Across the board, they also have consistently poor reviews. This is mostly due to the fact that there has to be a compromise made, and it appears that -so far- no one has been able to produce a heated cycling glove for a reasonable price that can keep your hands warm whilst you can still move them.

If you do insist on buying heated cycling gloves, invest in a good, reputable brand. As they increase in popularity, it’s inevitable that there will be knock-off products introduced to the market to meet demand. 

Unfortunately, it’s highly likely that there will be compromises when it comes to battery safety, and so, it’s best to avoid these ‘budget’ options unless you want to risk malfunctioning or in the worst case scenario, burning your hands.

Warmest Gloves for Cycling

When it comes to maintaining warmth during your rides, invest in well designed gloves that utilise good materials, such as Gore-Tex or PrimaLoft. Remember, the goal of the gloves is to insulate your hands and retain warmth.

There are, unfortunately, few to no gloves that can provide all the warmth and movement that you need. That being said, there are plenty of decent options available to satisfy most needs, as long as you aren’t planning on extended bikepacking trips through bitterly cold environments. 

It’s generally better to invest in thermal gloves, but more on that later.

How to Keep Your Hands Warm While Cycling

There are a few key ways to keep your hands warm and comfortable whilst on your bike.

• Layering: Start with a thin base layer glove that’s moisture-wicking to keep your hands dry. Then, add a thicker glove on top for insulation and heat retention.
• Hand Warmers: Use non-electric hand warmers that can generate heat when activated. You can place them inside of gloves on particularly cold days.
• Pogies: Handlebar mitts, or, ‘Pogies’, are insulated covers that enclose your handlebars and provide a space for your hands out of the wind.
• Hand Exercises: Keep your blood flowing, warm up and stretch before cycling. Wiggle your fingers, rotate your wrists and try to keep good circulation.
• Proper Clothing: Wearing proper clothing, such as a good pair of socks, also contributes to your overall warmth. 

Thermal Cycling Gloves for Winter

To keep your hands warm whilst cycling in the winter, there’s few things better than thermal cycling gloves. Excelling in providing insulation and flexibility, they usually utilise specialised materials and innovative design to ensure that your hands stay toasty.

Not only do they insulate, but good cycling gloves should be able to manage moisture whatever the weather. From preventing sweat on the inside to resisting water on the outside, they should be great in the rain or the snow.

One of cycling’s great fallacies is that it’s all lycra and helmets, carbon fiber and clip-cloppy shoes. Yes, cycling is a sport – a fun one at that – but it’s also a mode of transport, a way of getting around.

Whilst we definitely wouldn’t stop you from riding a bike in your everyday clothing, the odd cycling-specific garment is a godsend, especially in wet or cold weather.

Cleverhood’s Urbanuat Trench is a three-quarter-length jacket that protects riders from rain. Fabric technology gives the jacket extra visibility, plus other features make it useful for cycling.

In case you haven’t heard of them before, from their base in Rhode Island – a state with the 9th most yearly rainfall, Cleverhood curates a range of outwear for adults and kids, alongside other accessories.

The Urbanaut Trench is Cleverhood’s most expensive jacket, sitting atop their range, above the Zipster Jacket and the Rover Anorak. Lucy recently reviewed the Rover Anorak and found it was “the perfect solution to keep you warm, dry, and visible when riding.”

Cleverhood Urbanaut Trench Fit

The Urbanaut is sold in five sizes, XS through to XL, with the slim, unisex fit manufactured to fit a broad range of wearers. The three-quarter trench-style design offers extra coverage against the rain.

It has a raglan sleeve (stitched from the underarm up to the collarbone rather than at the shoulder) to give greater freedom of movement.

At the end of the sleeves, velcro cuffs can be utilised to provide the best fit in this area. For a good cycling jacket, I think this is a mandatory feature.

A kick pleat or slit in the rear of the jacket ensures the jacket doesn’t gather too tightly when sat in the saddle.

Overall, I found the trench a little too snug when riding – particularly in the armpit area when reaching for the handlebars. I couldn’t level that same criticism at the Jack Wolfskin jacket that I recently reviewed, but I should preface this with the fact that I am very tall, with long arms, and right at the limits of the Urbanauts XL sizing guide.

For those worried about the overall fit of the trench, Cleverhood provides a very helpful size guide for the jacket, with clear measurements for chest, arm length and front length.

Cleverhood Urbanaut Features

With fully taped seams and a waterproof coating, the Trench shrugged off some heavy summer showers while I was wearing it. Cleverhood states that the waterproof rating of the Urbanaut is 15k or 15,000mm.

The zips on the Urbanaut are extremely robust. When it’s already raining and your wheels need to roll, it’s a comforting feeling hearing that ‘zzzppppppp’ sound. Made by YKK, the ‘Aquaguard’ zipper can be zipped up from the bottom too, in order to allow for some venting.

The peak is very large – noticeably larger than other jackets I’ve had experience with, but when it was raining cats and dogs, it’s a feature I came to appreciate.

Cleverhood is very clear in stating that the hood should be worn under the helmet – that way it gives the best coverage and the best vision when riding. Whilst for most this will be fine, I found it fairly tricky to get comfortable with both the hood deployed and my helmet on – it was snug fit!

That’s not a particularly important gripe for me, because for trips wearing the Urbanaut – rides to the local shop and the like – I wouldn’t normally choose to wear a helmet, but it’s worth noting nonetheless.

The hood has three points where it can be tightened – on each side and at the rear. This way you can fine-tune the fit to your favour.

Although you can’t see it during the day, the Urbanaut Trench is made from fabric that’s embedded with 3M Scotchlite reflective material – look closely at the garment and you can see the thread that’s been weaved in.

Clearly, during the day it means the jacket doesn’t stand out like a beacon, but at night, when light is shined upon it, it really comes alive. If you ride predominately in town or on busy routes with cars and other cyclists, it’s a feature that you’d most definitely welcome.

The Urbanaut has two pockets, again protected by the weather by those robust YKK zips, providing a decent amount of storage for phones, keys and wallets. It would be nice to have another storage option, perhaps inside the jacket or a smaller option on the chest – maybe I’m being picky here.

Is the Cleverhood Urbanaut Trench worth it?

Available in three colours, the Cleverhood Urbanaut Trench is priced at $289 – shipping to the US is extra, with Cleverhood offering international shipping at various rates.

Yes, it’s quite expensive but the high waterproof rating more than makes up for that. It covers the fashion-function divide too, plus buy it and you’ll have supported a small, US-based business that gives 5% of its profits to causes that promote street equality.

I have been a fan of Cleverhood since I saw their yellow Rover Anorak jackets being worn at a Bike Bus in the USA via social media.

I was immediately taken aback by the bright colour, innovative design and practicality, as well as their support of a great initiative as they donate 5% of their profits to street equity organisations. 

From waterproof capes to their Cleverhat, they have a wide range of products designed to keep you warm, dry and visible when you cycle. 

Although I was tempted by the War on Cars option, I was keen to test the Bike Bus version of their Rover Anorak jacket as I have high hopes of setting one up locally, and it seemed like the best option for my needs.  

First Impressions

My jacket arrived carefully wrapped with a lovely red bow. Along with the jacket, inside there was a helpful information card. 

I was pleased to learn that Cleverhood has a female designer and founder, Susan Mocarski, who took it upon herself to design high quality, practical and stylish unisex rainwear for cycling as she noticed a gap in the market that needed to be filled. 

Despite me being quite petite, I was pleasantly surprised to find the small size fitted incredibly well. The helpful option to adjust the sleeves via velcro was welcome. I also appreciated the use of ‘Roomy’ to describe the larger size options. 

As the brand name suggests, the hood is the focus of these jackets and rightfully so. It feels sturdy and is easily adjustable. As a glasses wearer it also gave me hope that for the first time my glasses may be protected from rain while cycling thanks to the handy stiff peak as usually I have to take them off! 

I was also struck by the overall quality of the jacket. Compared to other rainwear, it is incredibly light and feels very comfortable, rather than heavy and cheap. 

Key Features

Testing

Thankfully the arrival of the jacket coincided with a very rainy time of year (the sunshine in the photos was a rare day of no rain!) so I had plenty of opportunity to put it to the test.

I greatly appreciate how much thought has gone into all aspects of the design of this jacket. 

Starting with the hood, it worked so well underneath my helmet and kept my head and face (and glasses!) dry. This was aided by the handy zipper which made sure my upper half was completely covered. 

I experienced one of my wettest commutes ever while wearing the Rover Anorak but remained completely dry, plus my jacket dried very quickly when I got to work. It also helped me to keep warm but felt breathable thanks to good air flow.  

Similarly I wore it off my bike for a few hours in continuous rain but marvelled at how water repellent the material is as the beads of rain just slipped off. Again, both me and my pocket contents stayed dry despite the relentless downpour. 

The large pocket was invaluable for storing my phone and keys, and it also features a waterproof zipper. Despite the additional weight it did not feel difficult to ride with the pocket loaded. The option to tuck your hands in behind the pocket was also helpful for when I wore the jacket off the bike.  

The long back was great in keeping the top of my bottom half dry, and also warm on the days when it has been rainy and windy. 

I also felt assured cycling in the dark thanks to the subtle but effective reflective elements on the front and back of the jacket. 

Verdict

Until now whenever it rained I had been wearing my standard rain jacket and often ended up still being soggy. The Rover Anorak is therefore without doubt my new go-to cycling jacket for the rain. It is stylish, comfortable and incredibly practical both on and off the bike. 

Unlike most of my other cycling clothing, my friends, family and colleagues have all complimented the jacket every time I wear it, including my sister who is so taken by it she is looking to get one!

With its paw print logo, Jack Wolfskin apparel is readily recognisable, especially in its bread-and-butter world of hiking and leisure wear.

Recently, the brand has gotten into cycling apparel and now produces a range of items designed for city cycling or riding to work.

The Bike Commute Mono is waterproof and windproof cycling jacket sold in both men’s and women’s variants. Is it any good?

Jack Wolfskin Bike Commute Mono Jacket Key Features

With a long history, Jack Wolfskin is a behemoth in the outdoor world – certainly in central Europe and the United States. Buy one of their items of clothing and you can be confident in its ability to perform its job.

The Bike Commute Mono Jacket has a number of key features – here are a few that I noticed when I wore it in a variety of situations.

Texapore Ecosphere Core

Like many outdoor clothing brands, Jack Wolfskin has slapped a brand (Texapore) on the material it uses for manufacturing different clothing items. The company has four different tranches of Texapore: Core, Pro, Ecosphere Core and Ecosphere Pro.

Texapore Ecosphere Core is the exact variation of the material used in the Bike Commute Mono Jacket. According to Jack Wolfskin, the Ecosphere Core variant of Texapore features the first waterproof outer material made from 100% recycled material.

The membrane of the material is also made using offcuts and the lining of the jacket is made from recycled content. The whole jacket, minus the reflective elements, is also recyclable.

Not only is Texapore Ecosphere Core made from recycled material (old PET water bottles to be exact), but it’s manufactured – to quote Jack Wolfskin – “using a reduced amount of CO₂.” If you’re into your sustainability, it would be nice to know the exact ins and outs of the manufacturing process, but hey, I suppose that’s better than no detail at all.

Ecosphere Core has a waterproof rating of 10,000mm – that’s the minimum rating for a fully waterproof jacket – and in our tests, the jacket stood up well to a good dousing. Wearing it in constant light rain and occasional heavy showers, I remained dry and happy.

The jacket is more waterproof than the Rapha Commuter Lightweight Jacket but similar to the Helly Hansen Ride Hood Cycling Rain Jacket.

The Texapore Ecosphere Core material has a breathability rating of 6,000 g/m_²/24h. In my experience, although I do run hot, the jacket did feel a tad sweaty in temperatures of 15° or more – worse when I started to press on the pedals trying to make an appointment.

On-bike fit

Because it’s primarily designed for commuting, the Bike Commute Mono has a relaxed fit. It’s not super tight, nor super loose. It can be worn under a couple of layers with no problem and the fit ensures you won’t look out of place when off the bike.

I wore it with a basic T-shirt on warmer, wetter days and on colder commutes over a technical tee and a softshell fleece. For reference, I’m wearing the XXL size.

During a couple of unseasonably cold spring days, with the jacket zipped all the way up, it felt reassuringly snug. Around the collar and neck area, there’s a section of soft material that feels good against the skin.

When wearing the jacket I found that I needed to use the cord around the hem to help the jacket fit my build. This was especially important when wearing the jacket on the bike.

Like most cycling jackets, the Bike Commute Mono has a long tail for extra coverage and well-proportioned sleeves to prevent the material from riding up when reaching for the handlebars.

The sleeve design is worthy of further explanation. An extra semi-circle of material provides good coverage but perhaps more crucially doesn’t look silly off the bike either. Sitting under flaps at the end of each sleeve is a reflective stripe. Turn them up for extra visibility, and flip them back to blend in as you arrive at the office.

Being tall, with long arms, I tend to struggle with sleeve length on all items of apparel but this jacket felt just fine. That said, perhaps it would have been nice to have some velcro straps to cinch the sleeves even tighter or provide a nice fit against some gloves in really bad weather.

In warmer weather, with the top zip and hood pulled down, I did feel the jacket became somewhat baggy and unwieldy. To negate this Jack Wolfskin has included another zipper, that way you can add some extra venting if you feel yourself steaming up.

Other cycling features

The jacket includes a (non-removable or stowable) hood. It’s not big enough to wear with a helmet but when deployed it feels reassuringly snug. A small peak gives the hood structure and prevents water from dripping into your face.

In total, there are four pockets in the jacket. One large one at the rear, two hand pockets and one inside the jacket. The additional pocket inside the jacket is nice. but if I was being picky it would be better if it was zipped, rather than a simple flap.

On the back of the jacket are two vents for extra breathability. Clearly, if you ride with a backpack, they’re not going to be a useful feature, but I found they did a decent job of providing some airflow.

Such is the nature of riding a bike in the rain, it’s wet one minute and dry the next. Thankfully the Bike Commute Mono Jacket is packable and is easily stored inside a backpack, messenger bag or pannier bag. At a shade over 400g in weight, the jacket isn’t a drag to carry.

Styling

Despite a few comments from acquaintances like “nice fishing jacket” we like the ‘Grey Olive’ colour that was sent in for review. Because it’s not tight nor luminous yellow it clearly doesn’t mark you out as a cyclist when you’re on foot.

If you’re not a fan of the brown/green colour, a more traditional black is available – both in the men’s and women’s versions of the jacket. Perhaps that’s a better choice if you’d like to tailor the jacket to different outfits off the bike.

Is the Jack Wolfskin Bike Commute Mono Jacket worth it?

At £275/$349.95 there’s no denying the jacket is expensive. The urban jacket segment is competitive and at this price, it’s at the higher end of this market.

That said the jacket clearly has all the important features a cycling garment should have. When all is said and done the jacket is going to do its job, keep you dry when riding a bike in the rain. It marks itself out from the competition by using recycled materials – plus the fact that it can be recycled at the end of its life.

The neutral or relaxed fit means the jacket could easily adapt to some gravel rides or some bikepacking adventures, perhaps just not an all-out road bike ride.

If you are willing to overlook a punchy price, the foibles of the hood and a fairly low breathability rating, buying the Bike Commute Mono wouldn’t be a silly decision.

Wearing the right legwear is the most important clothing consideration for cycling.

Get it wrong and you can end up sweating may more than you need to, destroying inappropriate trousers/shorts and – worst case – chafing. Nobody wants that.

In the summer months, such decisions are even more important. That’s why I’ve spent the past 10 years unearthing the best casual cycling shorts in the world.

And this year, we have a new contender: Ornot’s Lightweight Mission Short.

Ornot’s Urban Cycling Shorts

When I started Discerning Cyclist back in 2012, there were a few brands producing products that attempted to bridge the gap between style and function. And, in truth, the results were mixed. It was usually pretty clear than products were still “cycling clothes”, even if they tried to look a bit more every day.

But with the growth of activewear, athleisure, workleisure – or whatever new tag is now around – the quality of stylish clothes with built-in functionality has matured wonderfully.

To me, Ornot’s Lightweight Mission Short is the most epitome of the Discerning Cyclist mantra: these are stylish shorts. Point. No-one looking at them would ever assume that these are “cycling” shorts or boast the incredible functional that they do. And I love that.

So why do I love Ornot’s shorts so much?

Well, visually, they present a flattering slim fit design that cut a few inches above the knee (8.5” inseam).

But what you might not spot at first glance is that these shorts are stretchy. Really stretchy. You can squat in them with virtually no resistance.

Thanks to their blend of 85% Nylon and 15% Elastane, they’re not just lightweight, but also very durable.

Casual Bike Shorts with Gusset

Indeed, durability is a key feature of these Ornot shorts – and it’s something that you can overlook in cycling legwear.

The crotch is the area that gets most exposed (pun absolutely intended) in cycling shorts. This is due to the constant contact with the bike saddle, which can quickly wear away the material and seams.

To counteract this, Ornot have added a built-in gusseted crotch (i.e. a separate piece of material around the crotch area so that the seams don’t wear away).

Pockets

As well as breathability, flexibility and durability, another key element of any cycling pant is… pockets. I know, how exciting.

But again, Ornot have nailed this important criteria. The shorts have four pockets, two front hand pockets and two rear pockets. The right rear pocket is also zipped. The thing I like about these pockets is that they feel are deep, but compact enough so your things aren’t bouncing around. There’s plenty of space for a phone or wallet and there’s no feeling that they’ll fall out of your pocket.

Ornot Lightweight Mission Shorts Review: Summary

This might sound like hyperbole, but I think these are the perfect urban cycling shorts. They look great and they feel great – on and off the bike.

At $118, they’re far from cheap. But that’s the only criticism I have of them. Really.

If you can afford them, Ornot’s Lightweight Mission Short won’t let you down.

Amongst the general population these days, cycling tends to have the sort of rep that speaks of lycra, that speaks of heads down, bottom-up pedalling. Discerning Cyclist is here to prove that, for most people, this isn’t the kind of bike riding they actually do!

Nonetheless, cycling can be a strenuous activity, even when riding an electric bike, so keeping cool, smelling fresh and looking the part can be a worry – especially if using two wheels to get to work.

Here’s the good news. With the advent of new materials and new manufacturing processes, it’s possible to produce smart apparel that works on the bike but still looks dapper off it.

Staying Cool while Cycling to Work

Choosing to cycle to work instead of using a car or public transport, isn’t an easy decision – we get it. There are plenty of factors to mull over before ditching four wheels for two. How long it will take, how to carry your belongings – even where to store your bike during your shift.

One that might seem inconsequential to some, is how to keep cool while cycling to work. Even a leisurely pedal can leave you hot under the collar, and sometimes bringing a change of clothes for the workday isn’t possible.

Plus, depending on the nature of your work, looking smart and on-point may be a requisite part of your job. Getting your personal appearance right in the workplace can quickly give you the right first impression or the correct level of professionalism for your company or role.

Office-Friendly Cycling Shirts

This is where office-friendly cycling shirts enter the fray. Comfortable enough to button up in the morning whilst running through the day’s pitch in your head for the thousandth time. Cool enough to meander through town in the heat of a summer’s morning. And crucially, smart enough when you’re closing the pitch with that new client.

Office-friendly cycling shirts will probably have a collar and should be breathable to some extent. The best will have an element of stretch in their material, making them comfortable to ride a bike in. NASA-Inspired Bike Shirts

With a name like Apollo, Ministry of Supply has given us some clues as to the origins of this clothing range. Regulating the body temperature of astronauts in space is crucial. They will face temperatures from a bone-chilling -250°F to a stifling 250°F.

As part of a range of measures to cool those brave souls that head into the ether, Nasa developed a material to use in astronauts gloves that helped keep them at the right working temperature.

Nasa explains the material like this: “If the wearer became too warm or cool, the material could automatically respond by absorbing or releasing heat. At a designated high temperature, the material absorbs and holds heat to produce a cooling effect. At a designated low temperature, the fabric releases stored heat to produce a warming effect in an area.” Cleverly, Ministry of Supply decided to incorporate these Phase Change Materials (or PCMs for short) into a brand-new fabric for their Apollo range of shirts.

Let’s bring this back to earth and how these NASA-inspired shirts can be used for something as humdrum as cycling to work. Whilst the wearer of an Apollo shirt wouldn’t be tinkering with the ISS on a space walk, they’d still want to keep cool and ensure the garment doesn’t hold onto odour or creases.

After the success of the long-sleeved Apollo shirt, Ministry of Supply translated it into a casual polo top and for our money it’s one of the best cycling polo shirts around.

Although it uses a slightly different blend of polyester to the dress shirt, the polo does include the NASA Phase Change Materials that keep the wearer cool, calm and collected. Nineteen times more breathable than traditional fabrics, the polo is an ideal top for cycling to work during the summer.

The polo is lightweight and falls nicely, giving the right impression at an important meeting or after-work occasion.
